A Guilty Pleasure (finally) Makes It to DVD/Bluray!
THE SPIRIT IS WILLING

This is a movie I caught one afternoon on WLNE channel 6 when they had their "Dialing for Dollars" back around 1980.

It's a 1967 horror/comedy by William Castle which I believe is his last film. Sid Caesar stars with Vera Miles and John Astin. It's not particularly funny nor scary, but it does have Jill Townsend in her film debut playing multiple roles, one of which is a ghost who's sort of a nympho. She keeps trying to get it on with a vacationing 15 year old played by Barry Gordon. One of the scenes I especially remembered was they implied they did have ***--which was pretty compelling stuff for me, being about 14 at the time I saw the movie.
I never saw it again on TV, but that scene stuck in my head. For years, I couldn't even remember the name of the movie, but it finally came to me and I looked and looked for the VHS then the DVD. It was never released to home video, so I settled for a bootleg 3rd generation copy on eBay around 10 years ago.
It's really a pretty tame movie, but to a 14 year old with overactive hormones, it got the hooks in me. Like I said, it's a guilty pleasure. So now I can finally see a crisp letterboxed copy of the movie.

I never watched this movie but the Dialing for Dollars is a classic that I'd love to see on TV again. Of course it will never happen due to the endless news cycles on local channels, but who can forget characters like Bob Gamere on Candlepins for Cash? When I was in high school Ch 7 would air a movie at 4pm each and I seem to remember they liked sci-fi flicks and comedies. I watched The Omega Man for the first time on that station, which predated the Movie Loft on Ch 38 by several years. I'll have to check out The Spirit is Willing as I enjoy watching Castle's movies.

Yeah, I used to watch that show and Isis too, but definitely not for the acting!
I remember there was never any kind of fisticuffs on those shows. On EW&DG, all they ever did was stand around and use those gadgets on their forearms to do everything

Did you know that a pilot for a new Electra Woman show was made back in 2001? I saw this a while back while exploring youtube, and I couldn't believe it!
Markie Post was such a hottie back during her Night Court days.

Dialing for Dollars on WLNE was hosted by George Allen (I think) and he'd have a touchtone phone on a little table next to a tumbler filled with small strips of paper, cut from a telephone book. When the movie breaked for commercial, he'd come on before going back to the movie. He'd roll the tumbler and pick a strip of paper from it. He then count 7 from the bottom and call that number (it's amazing to me that I remember all this). If the person he called could name the title of that day's movie, they'd win the jackpot. Usually either no one answered or they weren't watching and didn't know the movie.

Every now and then, Dialing for Dollars would have entire weeks devoted to certain actors or genres. One week I remember was "Ape Week" where they edited episodes of the Apes TV show to make two-hour movies. I remember one was called "Treachery and Greed on the Planet of the Apes".

You might get a few chuckles out of "The Spirit is Willing", but it's more silly than funny.

While I love William Castle's horror films, I've had a hard time getting into his comedies. I picked up THE BUSY BODY when it hit DVD, and found it to be pretty weak. Ditto for SHANKS and LET'S KILL
UNCLE, which I suppose are more horror films than anything else. I just got review copies of the Sony MOD discs for 13 FRIGHTENED GIRLS and ZOTZ, and am curious to see how they play. I've never
seen ZOTZ!, but know it's a comedy. 13 FRIGHTENED GIRLS (aka THE CANDY WEB) I saw on TV in the 80s and didn't think much of, more of a melodrama than a horror film.

Anyway, it's still nice to see more William Castle get released on video.
