Hey, thanks for posting those, skorch. It's funny how I can feel nostalgia for something like old comicbook ads (or even old commercials). It just all ties in to what was part of our childhoods and I look at them now with a grin.
However, I can't look at Sea Monkeys the same way since witnessing a certain South Park episode:

I purchased the 100 piece soldier set. Talk about an ad that draws you in.
I sent the cash in an envelope and was told by everyone that my money would just be stolen. Several weeks later the package arrived and with much anticipation I opened the box and was never more disappointed in my young life. There were 100 pieces but they were so cheap and thin they barely stood up. I never showed anyone what I wasted my money on and I think I burned them - a phase I went through.

I bought those army men too. I remember the cheap cardboard footlocker never survived the mail and most of the army men were broken...such a bummer! LOL!

I thought I already posted here, but was obviously mistaken. I used to love the ads in comic books, Boy's Life and atuff like that. I think it's safe to say that longing for most of these products was better than actually owning them--which was generally a huge let down. Like Beastball said, it's interesting how much nostalgia we can have for the stuff between the shows and comics we loved as kids (the commercials and ads like these). At the time they were mostly a nuisance (with the exception of ads for really cool toys or snack foods of course...), but now we tend to associate those ads with the shows/magazines we enjoyed as kids. And the fact that they are generally much harder to find (thank god for YouTube!) than some of the old movies and shows we saw as kids that are now available on DVD makes them even more special now. When I see a commercial on YouTube, or something like that, that I haven't seen in 25-plus years my mind instantly goes back to those great old days. It's about the closest thing to a time machine that there is out there.
And I should also mention that, while I wasn't "lucky" enough to have purchased many of the products advertised on the pages of comics and magazined as a kid, I DID buy the same army men as others here have mentioned. And I was disappointed in a very similar way. I suppose that looking at it now I should have wondered just how much I was expecting for a buck-and-a-quarter. I was looking forward to the footlocker itself almost as much as the soldiers. Somehow I didn't see the dimensions of it listed as 6 1/2" x 3" x 2 3/8". That should have been a dead giveaway...but I was just a kid for cripes sakes! Guess it was a lesson in getting ripped off, and how the "Real World" of grown-ups wasn't always fair. I still remembr getting the package and wondering how a hundred army men could possibly fit into something so small (was it a clown footlocker?). Then I saw how small and flimsy the army men were. I can't say I recall playing with the set much. And I don't know what happened to it either. Probably a rare case when a parent threw a kid's stuff away and the kid didn't even notice...or care. I should have burned them like CDF Fan--at least that would have been kind of fun.

My favorite comicbook ads were the joke-shop ones. You know-- the ones for itching powder, throw your voice, magic tricks, garlic-flavored gum and so on. I always wanted to try those X-Ray glasses

Yeah those ads were always fun to read (and to imagine owning all those fun tricks). I was going to mention the X-ray specs, but didn't. Since you mentioned it though Beastball, I did want to ask...did anyone actually buy the X-ray glasses? I imagine that that is one product that it was best to fantasize about (even moreso than the army men set). Owning them would only serve to smash the idea that I'm sure we all must have had--namely that we'd be able to see through womens' clothing! Boy, they really knew who they were dealing with when they made those ads huh?

I guess that would be pretty cool. At least up to the point where they drove him mad and made him rip his eyes out! Yeah, I think I'd probably pass on that experience.
