DECADES TV New Substation Channel 4.2
Decades TV network has begun on WBZ subchannel 4.2 with "binge" showings of classic TV shows until the actual launch coming in May. Right now all the Lucy shows are being aired continuously until Tuesday. Car 54 Where Are You? airs all day Tuesday and then Gomer Pyle will be shown through Saturday. 36 shows in all will air from now to May until the formal launch of the new network.

Thanks for the info Beastball! This channel suddenly showed up on our TV a few days ago and I had no idea what it was. I was excited to see yet another antenna-based channel appear, but all I was seeing on it was a bunch of infomercials and Lucy episodes. I suppose it would have been easy enough to look it up online, but now I don't have to! For some reason they seem to have a strange aspect ratio. Me-TV broadcasts in 4:3, which makes sense since all their stuff is very much pre-wide screen TV, but DECADES TV seems to be even narrower than that. I'm sure I can change the ratio of my TV, but then everything else (which looks fine now) will be messed up. Anyway, I'm thrilled to see yet another retro-TV channel join the fray!

Okay, this DECADES channel is starting to look like it might be intriguing! I still haven't visited the website yet so I'm still not exactly sure what to expect from it, but this "series binge" telecasting of entire shows while they count down to their official start is a neat idea. The real intriguing part is what's on right now. I've seen Lucy and Gomer Pyle and stuff like that, which would seem the usual retro TV fodder. Not that there's anything wrong with the "usual retro TV fodder" or anything, but... I was just flipping channels and saw something that I could hardly believe--Celebrity Bowling!!! I can't say I ever really watched stuff like Candlepin Bowling (or Candlepins for Cash or whatever it was called), but that kind of stuff brings me right back to the 70s, a time when I remember going bowling with my nephew on Saturdays and my parents always seemed to be part of some bowling league. I don't think I ever saw Celebrity Bowling (which is the standard style bowling rather than Candlepins), but it's scarily 70s! There's currently two teams of two female celebrities playing. I have no idea who they are, but it's pretty hilarious watching it in all its 70's glory! Wait, a new episode JUST started and it includes McLean Stevenson on one of the teams. This is VERY interesting and a nice change from the usual fare of sitcoms and dramas. I hope I get a chance to see more of this alternative kind of programming when DECADES officially starts.
The next series binge will feature The Abbott & Costello Show!

Celebrity Bowling is a riot! Never seen it before and I was trying to watch as much as I could. I would snicker at the prizes like the new-fangled Amana Radarange microwave oven, or the stereo phonograph with 8-track player, or the grand prize of a $#!+ box subcompact Chevy Vega (although one grand prize was a Pontiac Firebird and later shows had a week vacation to New Orleans).

Who knew that Roy Rogers was such a good bowler? The one with **** Martin teamed with Billy Barty was really good too. I really wanted to catch the Shatner one but missed it (I was hoping Nimoy was his teammate). They had the duo from Adam-12 as a team in one. Do you remember the Saturday morning show THE MONSTER SQUAD? The fellow who played Drac was teamed with Ed Asner in one episode.

It looked like they filmed multiple episodes at a time because several celebrities would be in more than one episode wearing the same clothing and sometimes you could see some of them sitting in the audience waiting to film the next episode. Cathy Lee Crosby bowled a game then in the next episode you could see her in the audience, then she would be in the following episode.

Enjoying the A&C show right now and they did the Who's on First? routine tonight but it was a little different than when they did it in the movie THE NAUGHTY NINETIES. Up next after A&C is a solid week of THE UNTOUCHABLES--another show I rarely saw as a kid, but I really like it now. There will be a solid week of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE in the near future!

Funny you mentioning the wonky aspect ratio--the shows look perfectly fine on the big TV in the living room, but the picture is narrower on the portable TV in the kitchen.

That Celebrity Bowling really was a fun thing--and different from all the regular scripted stuff usually seen on the retro stations. It makes for a nice change of pace. I didn't really see many people I was particularly interested in (would have loved to see Shatner or some of the ones you mentioned Beastball). I guess I mostly saw early examples from the early 70s (McLean Stevenson was known for being in The Doris Day Show rather than M*A*S*H). I'm sure later episodes would have had a lot more stars I'd be familiar with. It was still fun though seeing these folks in their 70s garb, bowling and having a good time. And, yes, I loved seeing what the prizes were! I know times change and things that were good back then might not seem as good now, but it almost seemed like a SNL parody where they would use stereotypical iconic 70s crappy products and vacation destinations. You half expect to see a Ronco Pocket Fisherman or a set of Ginsu knives as a prize.

I'm hoping that the show will get a nice time slot when the channel starts its regular programming so I can get a chance to check it out on a regular basis. I'm enjoying seeing some of the Abbot & Costello show (which I've never seen much of). And I hope I get a chance to see some of the Mission: Impossible binge! Looks like this channel is going to have some great shows.

DECADES sounds pretty cool. I discovered CELEBRITY BOWLING by accident on Amazon, where there are 3 or 4 DVDs of it. I bought one that featured episodes with the kids
from THE BRADY BUNCH, and had a great time with it. Definitely a time capsule. It's amazing to me that these shows have survived (who'd have thought they'd have re-run value
at the time?), and someone thought to market them for video and syndication now. I'm always thrilled when something like this pops up on a new channel, as you'd think the powers
that be would assume that as the show isn't remembered widely anymore, it wouldn't be worth running. Nice when a channel takes a chance and delivers some lesser-run nostalgia
for folks who remember these things or didn't get a chance to catch them the first time around.

the great thing about having more channels is they desperately need content so whacky stuff will live on. :)

I just noticed another substation popped up on channel 25.3 called LAFF TV. Seems to be in pre-launch stage.

Re: DECADES TV New Substation Channel 4.2
We just stumbled on LAFF TV too last night! And the REALLY cool thing was that when I saw it was on 25.3 I decided to try out MOVIES on 25.2 and...it was on! I know the channel went live like a year ago, but for whatever reason we never got it. Every couple months I'd check and it would never be there. It was SO cool to finally see it last night. And the first movie that was on when I tuned in was Steve McQueen in "Hell is for Heroes"! I started watching it and my wife was going to let me watch it since she could tell I was excited to see it on. Then I told her that we could watch something else because I have it on DVD. She thought it was crazy, but I just find it so awesome when a movie I'd watch as a kid on channel 56 or 38 is actually on TV. Despite the fact that I could just throw the DVD in anytime or find some other way to watch most any movie at any moment it just feels so much cooler and nostalgic to have it on broadcast TV. It's out of your control and you just have to watch it when it's on or you'll miss it (just like in the old days)!

Re: DECADES TV New Substation Channel 4.2
HELL IS FOR HEROES quickly became a favorite war movie despite (and embarrassingly enough) only discovering it a few years ago. WWII is by far my favorite subject for war movies with Viet Nam a distant second. I'm glad you've finally got MOVIES! Col. Manning, I think they are the best channel movie-wise (no editing for time and letterboxed too!).

Are you able to get GRIT? It's a substation of channel 6 (6.2). They show a lot of Westerns and on the weekends they have war movies--their "Weekend Warrior" lineup. DECADES just finished their binge of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA and before that was an awesome week of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. Right now they just started the MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E binge.

LAFF TV seems to have only about four or five sitcoms sandwiched in between comedy movies as their total lineup. I checked their website and all they have are ELLEN, SPIN CITY, EMPTY NEST, DREW CAREY SHOW, and GRACE UNDER FIRE. The only one I've ever seen is Drew Carey, so their shows don't really appeal to me. There are so many sitcoms available, I sincerely hope they expand their lineup.
