Aaaahhh..yes. The Depeche Mode concert is this Friday night, 2 more days!!! We are meeting up with a group of fans for lunch before we check in the hotel. I keep checking the weather report, and it may thunderstorm! Nonetheless...I can't wait!!!

The last time I saw Dave Gahan (the singer of Depeche Mode) on his solo tour in 2003 I was also in the front row. (It was general admission at Avalon, my friend and I arrived hours earlier and waited all day, and I got to meet him and have my picture taken with him, too! ) It was so cool!!!

i was, i think, in second or third row for the cure at the centrum. it actually wasn't that great being so close believe it or not. the sound was bad because you could hear all the stage sound and the house mix. plus i had to keep looking up at an angle.

the best seats i have had for shows is near the soundboard. it's always going to have the best sound and usually good sight lines.

The Cure is also a great band! They did a cover of Depeche Mode's "World in My Eyes" a few years ago! 8)

The sound at "Great Woods" was perfect! The show rocked! The band was 10 feet away! My son took some great photos! I couldn't ask for more!

Congratulations south shore girl. Sounds like you had a great time (despite the weather). And, Happy Belated Birthday!

There's nothing quite like "up close and personal" seats to see your favorite band, is there?

I've seen some fun shows at Great Woods over the years...The Monkees in 1987 and 1989, Spinal Tap in 1992, and Aerosmith/KISS in the early 00s. Don't get over there too often, but it's always a tad nostalgic when I do.

The Spinal Tap show was amazing. My high school chums and I had reeeeeaaaaly good seats, and the show was as much comedy as it was music. If you can find the video release of THE RETURN OF SPINAL TAP, the show I saw was pretty similar. The opening act was Big Nozzo, a strange Boston-area band that performed in puppet-like costumes. Kind of like a slightly-grotesque Banana Splits. The Tap show I attended was the final gig of their US tour (for the BREAK LIKE THE WIND album), so there was some unscripted hi-jinks thrown in courtesy of the road crew.

Oh yes, I've seen The Return of Spinal Tap several times....I love how Marty DiBerghi has an office out in the hallway with a payphone, and Derek Smalls sanitizes phones with his father, and David St. Hubbins earns a small stipend coaching a girl's football team, and Nigel has invented a folding wine glass!

The dvd of This is Spinal Tap has more special features than I have ever seen on any dvd. In addition to a couple hour's worth of deleted scenes, the band does the commentary for the entire movie in character, making it a whole new viewing experience! So funny!

I wish I had seen the Break Like the Wind Tour! A good friend of mine (who had originally introduced me to Tap) saw it in Wisconsin. I visited her last summer and we went to Shank Hall in Milwaukee!

I also have the special edition of This is Spinal Tap and it's true that there's enough deleted material for another entire movie!
I have to agree about the commentary too...the hilarity begins as soon as the title screen comes up and they start commenting about that!

I've got the Criterion laserdisc (which came with a Spinal Tap guitar pick), which has two commentaries -- one with the Tap guys out of character, and one with Rob Reiner. It also has a bunch of the deleted footage, as well as the first appearance of Tap, on a TV comedy special from the 70s that Reiner also had a hand in (he introduces them as a character spoofing Wolfman Jack). Not sure if that skit or the other commentaries made it to DVD or not via Criterion, or if the MGM disc with the in-character commentary is the only one you can get.

Another fun pre-Tap appearance is on the Lenny & The Squigtones album from the late 70s -- on the band photo on the inner sleeve of the album, one of the guitarists is Nigel Tufnel, dressed like a 1964-era Beatle.

You're very lucky to have the Criterion!

The special edition does not have the Rob Reiner commentary, nor the guitar pick! Luckily, the other features are included. Does Rob Reiner do the commentary in character as well? I love watching the movie with Tap's commentary! I've seen the movie literally over 100 times in my life and know the dialogue by heart from beginning to end, so I find it an entirely new viewing experience! Tap seems so bitter, and they are so mad at Marty DiBerghi!

Yes! Even the dvd menus are hilarious!!!

In the deleted scenes, I love how they show what happened that one night with Tap and the chauffer (the late, great Bruno Kirby).

I'll have to look out for the Lenny and the Squigtones album! The vision of Christopher Guest dressed as a 1964 era Beatle just reminded me of another fine film...The Rutles!

Ah yes The Rutles!
I've been into The Beatles all my life (I'm talking pre-school here!) I really loved how every detail was warped for The Rutles.

My very first Beatle album (around 1967ish)

Image

Yeah, it's a Beatle rip-off album that was prevalent back then....but I was only 3....how would I know there weren't 5 members?

Puppet Show
and
Spinal Tap

I LOVE that album cover!

My first Beatles album was Magical Mystery Tour, which I won at Brigantine Castle in NJ when I was in 3rd/4th grade (in the 70's). I later became a huge Stones fan!

Janine almost succeeded in taking Tap down, but she did tell them a thousand times to put SPINAL TAP first, then Puppet Show!

If I was able to, I would have went to Tap's most recent show: http://www.unwigged.com/ The dvd is coming out soon, it should be fun!
