Were they originally sold in department stores or were they premiums from someplace like McDonalds?

The King Kong glasses came from Burger Chef

I still have one of each of the EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI glasses packed away, ditto for THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER. I've since found some in thrift stores, so I pretty regularly
use a couple of the CAPER glasses. Never saw those KONG ones. Very cool.

The EMPRE and JEDI glasses were offered at Burger King. You paid a little extra for your soda and it came in the glass, with a regular plastic lid on it like you'd normally get. They also had Star Wars-themed
tray liners that you could color as part of a coloring contest, and they'd put one or two EMPIRE Topps cards on your tray with your food (the yellowish/orange bordered series). They really went whole-hog on
those promotions at the time.

That's why I have a set of the Star Wars glasses packed away. They were made of thin glass and were like floor magnets. We went to Burger King often enough that my mother had the wise notion of packing away a full set, and letting us use the other, just about all of which broke in a short amount of time.
