 Hurricane Ike hits Houston
Well as most of you know Hurricane Ike hit the Gulf Coast on Friday night and boy did Houston get hammered. My apartment complex alone looks like Godzilla did a walk though (just remember the scene where he walked on Odo island at night during the storm from the original film). We have 40' trees lying on the ground, broken tree limbs, several side streets in my neighborhood are still flooded. We lost power around 11:30p Friday night and water and ice are as precious as gold. We finally got our power back five minutes ago and we now have steady but low water pressure. This thing was a monster, the eye was 90 miles wide and the rest was 275 miles in each direction. and took up 50% of the Gulf of Mexico. Luckily my cell phone can stay in stand by mode for 200 hours so I can have communication. I'll be damned if I go to work tomorrow.

Happy to hear you got your power back so soon...some people will be without it for at least a week or two.
You know, as much as I can't stand the Winter and snow, I am so glad we don't get the wild weather up here in New England, that you get in the south. I think I would freak out if I ever had to face a tornado.

We faired ok through it but by the looks of it Galveston took a pounding and most of the businesses along the main strip by the seawall were destroyed. Looks like nuke went off

This is one of the worst we've had in a while and despite the really crappy conditions the roads are in , my boss still wants us to come in and try to run our routes

They are predicting 2-4 weeks until power is restored for some areas

I think people are going to start becoming desperate. Today in Pasadena (just south of Houston) a guy waited in line to get gas and when he got to the front of the line, the station ran out, so he went inside to take it out on the store clerk while brandishing a knife. The police were called and he refused to drop the knife when told to do so, the police opened fire killing him. The lines for fuel are ridiculous now (just like the seventies). I am lucky, I filled up a day before we got the warning and just parked my vehicle. I am set for about another week.

I saw on the news there was quite a bit of price gouging going on at the gas pumps..charging upwards of $5 a gallon. Have you seen any of that or are they cracking down on that?

The state is allowing some gouging but since gas prices have been hovering around $3.50 to almost $4.00 a gallon the state won't intervene until it is too out of hand. In the wake of Hurricane Rita several years ago, where stations were charging $5-6 a gallon (the average was $2.50 when Rita hit), the Texas Attorney General is taking this seriously.
