 In Search Of... On DVD!

Well, it's finally happened! The old "In Search of..." show that many of us grew up with during the time of Creature Double Feature has finally been released on DVD. It's something I'd heard about, but was never sure that it would actually happen. A couple years ago I bought a homemade set from iOffer.com that had all the episodes cobbled together from the 1990s/2000s airings of the show on A&E and The History Channel (I believe). While not an official release or the original shows as seen in 70s/80s I thought it was the best I could get. I even went as far as to make a two-volume set out of it (using a couple of 10-DVD cases and making up covers for them).

Well, it was recently reported on another thread about Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot that VEI has finally released "In Search of...". skorch mentioned the news on the other thread and I figured it was worth starting a new thread specifically for the show and this release.

There seem to have been a number of delays in the release, which had me concerned that it might get tied up in legal issues or something and never see the light of day. tvshowsondvd.com has been reporting about the various delays. Amazon had it listed for pre-sale, then it was listed as being "Out of Stock". As of this morning (Dec 14) it is listed as "In Stock". The list price is supposedly $149.99 and Amazon has it for $104.99. Mark and others mentioned that it might be cheaper to get it from Canada (where VCE is based). I had already decided that I wasn't going to pick up the set for a while (both because I can't really afford it right now and because of fears that it might not actually show up). I figured if I wait a while I could confirm that the set really "exists" and read reviews to make sure it's all it seems to be. Also there was the hope that it might get even cheaper. Of course there's also the chance that it might go out-of-print and become impossible to find.

Then I checked the VCE site and they had the set listed at $89.99 with free shipping. Since I still had money left over from not being able to go to the Drive-In Super Monster-Rama show in September, and because Christmas is coming up, I decided to take a chance on the set. I just ordered it. Will report back to let everyone know what (if anything) shows up.

Here's the Johnny Sokko thread where this news was first reported:

Good early news. Within a couple hours of placing my order I got an e-mail from Paypal saying that a shipping label had been created and my order would be sent to me via "Paypal Shipping with Canada Post". That's a good sign. More later...

It would be cool to get the complete show on DVD! I remember being "fascinated" (pun meant!) with the show when it originally aired. Wasn't it aired on Sundays afternoons on WCVB 5 or something? I have been watching some of the episodes that are on youtube, but of course the quality is lacking.

Re: In Search Of... On DVD!
It was syndicated, and seemed to be on many different channels at different times. Sundays at 5 on WCVB certainly sounds possible. I was looking at the reviews on Amazon, and "reviews" is an odd term for them because it's mostly people just talking about the show--since they don't have the sets in hand yet. But the only negative review I saw was questioning the logic of releasing something that has such outdated information which was already questionable and/or faulty when it was first aired. It's sort of a good point, but of course I'm not interested in "In Search of..." because if its hard science. I'm interested in it for its nostalgic value to me. I (and most of the rest of us) grew up watching this stuff around the time I was just getting interested in all of these "unsolved mysteries". I'm sure the show first introduced me to many of the topics I'm still interested in to this day.

Re: In Search Of... On DVD!
I used to watch it Sunday afternoons on WBZ. One episode about Bigfoot scared the heck out of me, even though I was watching it during the day with my grandfather in the room.

I'm glad to hear you say that Mark. I was almost embarrassed to mention how terrified I was of one of the Bigfoot episodes myself. I remember being excited that a Bigfoot episode was coming on (as I've always been a Bigfoot follower), but when one of the re-creation scenes was on I actually had to leave the room. I pretended that I wanted to go downstairs to tell my sister that it was on and she should come up and watch it, but I was actually just escaping from the horror!

You got that right, astroal! I used to have to watch Lost in Space (!) from the doorway when it got too creepy. It was either a monster suddenly showing up, or when the "threat" music started. It would slowly build until it was pulse-pounding and you knew something awful was about to happen. Never failed in making me leap from the couch scrambling for the doorway. Granted, I was only 5 or 6 at the time, but there you go.

Re: In Search Of... On DVD!
Hmmm... Just as this thread grew out of the one about Johnny Sokko, maybe we should start a new thread about all the things (on TV or otherwise) that scared us as kids. Sort of like one of those fun threads from the early days of the old CDF board. I know there's only a few of us that still post around here, but it could still be fun.

UPDATE:
This whole "In Search of..." DVD thing is a bit of a mystery itself. I was a bit nervous about putting my order in--for fear that the set would never materialize and I'd somehow be out ninety bucks. Anyway, here's the latest in my adventure. A short time after placing my order last Friday on VEI's website I got an e-mail from Paypal saying that it would be sent by Canada Post. Didn't hear anything else after that. When I checked the e-mail again a couple days ago I saw that there was an order number that I thought might be a tracking number as well. Went to the Canada Post website and put the number into the tracking search window. It showed that the package had indeed been put into the system, which was a relief. Looking at Amazon I can see that people are now starting to write reviews of the set itself (and not simply saying how cool of a show "In Search of..." was and general info like that). That meant that they must have actually received their sets! I checked the Canada Post site again last night and it said that the package has "arrived in a foreign country". Apparently it's in the Chicago sorting/customs office. Hopefully it will be here within a few more days. It'll be nice to have it by Christmas!

I see that Amazon's $100.99 price must have indeed been a special pre-order sale. They now list the set for $129.99. VEI still has it listed at $89.95 at the moment (with free shipping through the end of the year). VEI also includes a free "Bonus Disc" of Leonard Nimoy's "Brave New World". I don't know if this is a bonus only for people who order the set through VEI or if it's part of the set. Should find out soon enough though. They do list it separately for $9.95.

Re: In Search Of... On DVD!
Someone on the AV Maniacs board posted a picture of their set, which looks glossy and huge. I'm really curious to hear about the quality of the episodes, since, as you mentioned, there have been several things about this whole enterprise that have made me wonder how legit it is. Here's hoping that they're uncut and look at least as good as they did when we saw them as kids.

Re: In Search Of... On DVD!
It's still listed as being in Chicago, so it seems unlikely that I'll get it by X-Mas. Oh well, it'll be something to look forward to after all the holiday excitement. It would have been extremely appropriate if it could have arrived today (December 21) since it's the day the world is supposed to end. I could have watched the "Mayan Mysteries" episode today! (Actually I DID watch that episode after midnight last night via YouTube for a blog I was writing about 12/21/12).

Yeah Mark, the set itself looks like it is very attractively put together. From what I've read in early reviews the shows are indeed uncut and exactly as seen when first aired (huge relief). Apparently the video quality is somewhat less-than-perfect, due to the fact that the show was filed so long ago and the source video came from old tapes rather than some digitally remastered stuff (not sure of the technical specifics, but I believe that is what I've read). I guess they did a good job with what was available. Of course the most important thing with something like this is the show itself. I don't need it to be high-def perfect or anything. Slightly less-than-perfect video quality will make it that much more like it was watching it back in the day!

Re: In Search Of... On DVD!
Well, it's a (minor) Christmas miracle! The Canada Post tracking site said that the set arrived in a "foreign country" (meaning the U.S.) on the 19th. As of this morning it was still listed as being in Chicago. I was getting worried that it was being held up in customs or something. Whatever the reason for the hold-up it was obvious that I wasn't going to see the set before Christmas. I figured that tomorrow (Monday the 24th) was the last postal delivery day before Christmas, and there wasn't much chance of it making it all the way to Massachusetts if it was still stuck in Chicago.

But then came this morning. When I entered our apartment building after church around 11:30 I saw a small package sitting by the inner door. Sure enough, it was addressed to me. Somehow the set was delivered this morning--despite the fact that it's Sunday. I know it wasn't there yesterday, and according to the Canada Post site the package is STILL in Chicago...more than twelve hours after it was delivered to me! Just another mystery to all the ones covered by "In Search of..." I guess.

I'll report back with more info on the set itself once I get a chance to check it out, but at least the wait is over and its in my home now!
