 King Kong 1976 on Bluray
This came in today. It's a Japanese import. Full 1080p, but like all upscales of older films, the picture is pretty grainy. The video quality is about 20% better than DVD.

The trailer and an old behind the scenes documentary.

I really like the '76 KONG. Too bad it's not better regarded, as there's a bunch of additional scenes that could be tacked on as extras that were used in the network TV broadcast.

I wonder if the grain in the image is the result of the older film stock, as well as optical printing for the effects of the day.

That's what I was thinking, it's possible it was upscaled from a copy instead of the original film. The bluray was produced by Studio Canal, not Paramount.

I'll always have a soft spot for this movie even though it's considered "schlock" compared to the original. I was in the sixth grade when this came out and at the height of my CDF mania. Saw this at the theater and I collected the cards as well. I even remember a sort of novelty song about Kong they made that was played on the radio fairly regularly (they made one for Jaws the previous year). I do have the DVD, but it doesn't have the deleted scenes, which I am curious to see.

not really, with the exception of having an extended fight scene with the giant snake which ended up dragging the fight on and being pretty boring

I'll always have a soft spot for this movie! I remember seeing it at the Sack Savoy cinema in downtown Boston in Dec. 76. Great time!

I remember watching it on NBC when it was the "Big Event". And of course those were the days when a movie like that on TV truly WAS an event! In fact, that's probably the only way I saw the movie until it became readily available on VHS. To be honest, I'm not even sure if I even saw it on VHS or if it wasn't until DVD. I now have a DVD copy that I picked up at f.y.e. in the bargain bin for something like $1.97. It was actually supposed to be around $4.99, but they honored the price on the sticker. Nice! I really don't think its a bad film at all. It was probably at a big disadvantage because it was a remake of such a classic.
