 Life's Simple Pleasures
Here's an open thread I started for no particular reason...

What are your life's simple pleasures? Not life's greatest pleasures like your wedding or birth of your first child or any other once-in-a lifetime event, but rather something that can occur any day. Something that you don't consciously acknowledge or actively comment on.

Here's one:
Take-out pizza. Whether you pick up or have delivered. That moment you open the box and behold the pizza. That mounting anticipation when you grab your first slice. And to top it off, you have something great on TV to go with it!

Here's another one:

You know that feeling when you first wake up? You're nice and warm and relaxed...and extremely comfortable, especially if it's cold outside. Well, this feeling is usually ruined with the fact we have to get up for work (or school, or exercise etc.). But what about those rare days when you DON'T have to get up? You wake up and as soon as you realize you can stay right there, a feeling of pure bliss overtakes you.

a simple pleasure for me is a nap.

i know what you mean about the waking up thing. it is great when you can roll over and go back to sleep.

the pizza one is good too.

one big one for me is going for a stroll around the neighborhood with my wife and just enjoying being outside and away from all our devices...

This is a good idea for a thread. In a world where we have so many responsibilities and distractions it's easy to forget about little things that help keep us sane. This is a good way to think about and value those things.

For me, one of my Simple Pleasures is getting a chance to go to the movies by myself. After a long day (or week) it's nice to be able to be alone sometimes and do something that I really enjoy going (like going to see a movie). And the movie doesn't even have to be a great one or one that I've been eagerly anticipating. Though, if it IS those things then it's even better.

I absolutely love the smell of freshly cut lawn in summertime. To me it has a very sweet and fresh quality to it like when you cut open a watermelon. Strolling through the neighborhood like astroal does, would be a great way to enjoy this. When I drive through a residential area with the windows down and smell freshly cut lawn, I can't help but to inhale deeply through my nose. If only they could bottle this scent, I would spray it in my house all winter.

I've only been to the movies alone once and that was back in 1995. I was still heavily into video games and wanted to see "Mortal Kombat", but couldn't find anyone else interested in my circle of friends, so I went alone. I can understand the need and enjoyment to be by yourself. Growing up, it used to happen to me alot. However, I've been living alone for a long time now and have the opposite problem. I suppose that's why when I do anything, I like to do it with other people involved (like going to the movies, ballgame, eating out, etc.)...most things I could easily do alone.

fresh cut grass does smell great.

i agree. it would be nice smell to have to spray around in winter.

also like the smell of burning leaves in the fall.

i've only been to the movies alone a couple of times just because i couldn't get anyone to go with me at the times i wanted to go.

Going to the movies alone is the default for me, as I have the reviewing gig and need to see 2-4 each weekend. I like it, and don't mind the solitude a bit.

I was going to say the just being at a theater or Drive-In makes me calm and happy.

Also, flipping through used records at my own pace is a mellowing agent I enjoy.

 Re: Life's Simple Pleasures
Freshly cut grass is a nice smell. I think I like it even more for it's nostalgic effect than the aroma itself. When spring comes around and I start to smell freshly cut grass (after so many months of cold and snow) I always feel just a bit like I've been transported back to the past and like I'm smelling my own lawn as a kid after my Dad mowed it. It reminds me of summer (obviously), but specifically of those magical summers spent outside as a kid.

I can see how the whole going-out-alone might not appeal to someone living on their own as much. I enjoyed going out by myself sometimes, but it wasn't really one of life's simple pleasures. I spent many years as a bachelor and definitely preferred to go out with my friends than by myself. I guess it's become more of an "escape" of sorts now that I'm living the family life.

And I have to say that a thread like this is kind of one of my simple pleasures too! I remember on the old message board and the early days of this one that there were a lot of "getting to know you" questions posted by members. Stuff like the obvious "What was your favorite CDF movie" and things like "what is the worst movie monster you ever saw?" were great ways for all of us CDF fans to connect. I still love the board (of course), but you don't really see many of those kinds of questions posted anymore. there really isn't much of a need for them anymore now that the board seems to be mostly made up of this small core of regulars who have posted so much over the years and now kind of know each other to some extent. I've been meaning to post one of those kinds of questions for a while, but haven't managed to get around to it.

Funny thing about eating Chinese food is I usually enjoy the second plate more than the first. The first plate goes down too fast to really enjoy it enough. With seconds, I usually slow down to savor it more.

Know another Simple Pleasure? After a long day of being on my feet, I love coming home and kicking off my shoes then putting my feet up on the recliner....Ah, so good!

What about that feeling after getting out of the shower? You're all scrubbed clean and talcum powdered smooth. Then you put on some super comfy loose fitting clothes. I swear it never fails that if I sit back in the recliner after doing this, I end up falling asleep for being so comfortable.

 Re: Life's Simple Pleasures
Speaking of sleeping, I had this weird dream (aren't they usually weird in some way?) last night/ this morning.
I dreamed (dreamt?) I drove down to Philadelphia to see a hockey game. The thing is I was driving my old car from 20 years ago and I brought along my cat that I had a long time ago too. But I also had my new laptop with me. When I got there, I got a room, but it was this old shack (?) and I left my laptop there with my cat as I went to the game.
At the game I was trying to talk to a Philly fan sitting next to me and although he was talking English, I couldn't understand him and had to pretend I did. Next thing I knew I was back at the shack but my car is missing and the door to the shack is rotting and falling off its hinges. I go inside and the cat is curled up sleeping on the bed. My laptop is MISSING! I go into a panic because my laptop has all sorts of passwords and such that I use for creditcards and banking and PayPal etc..
I try to use the phone to cancel my card, but the phone is old style and for some reason has three sets of numbers and theyre very tiny. Every time I try to dial, I hit the wrong numbers. I can't even phone home. That's all I can remember right now, but I do remember falling back asleep and dreaming I was driving along trying to tell this dream to someone I worked with more than 15 years ago. Very weird trying to explain a dream you just had in yet another dream.

 Re: Life's Simple Pleasures
I really enjoy that first day in Spring when the temperature climbs to the mid sixties and I can open the windows for a few hours. After the long months of Winter with the house being hermetically sealed, to finally have lovely fresh air coming in is more than a relief.
