 Long-Lost Stooges Technicolor Short FOUND!
A 35mm nitrate print of Hello Pop! was found in Australia and is in the proccess of being restored. The previously last known print was destroyed in a fire at MGM back in 1967.

I am happy to announce that The Vitaphone Project has located a complete Technicolor print of the long-lost Stooges 1933 MGM Colortone short HELLO POP! This is the only lost short with all three Stooges, and also stars Ted Healy and Henry Armetta. The 35mm nitrate print was found overseas and after some torturous steps to get the nitrate packaged and shipped, it is today safely in the hands of my friend Eric Aijayla at YCM labs. Ned Price at WB has ensured the funding of the restoration, and ideally we could see this within a year. The sole known print burned in the big MGM fire in the 1960's.

I've never seen this before--to be able to see something totally new (to me) from the Stooges and in color no less--is very exciting!

It also seems there may be even more lost Stooges shorts to be uncovered:

Unbelievable news. My jaw dropped to the floor. I'm always interested in how lost films are found, especially this one. I'm sure it will be awhile before we get to see it but considering it's a film I realistically never thought I would see, the wait is more than worth it.

Crossing my fingers for Hats Off and Jailbird of Paradise next.

I will be going into some of the interesting details of HELLO POP's discovery when I update my old Journal article on it.

Regarding those other two lost films you mention, I can't say anything more right now, but I will just say there are a lot more where this one came from! (still being inventoried...)

On this week's Warner Archive Podcast, the hosts mention the discovery of HELLO POP, and that they'll be releasing a DVD set of the Stooges MGM shorts soon, including this new (re)discovery. They'd been holding off doing so until they could present them all, which makes me wonder if the other lost MGM short is also in the pipeline...

Wow, this really is great and exciting news (mostly for Stooges fans obviously, but also for fans of film in general). It's so cool to know that "lost" stuff is still out there waiting to be found. It's also great that the art of restoration can bring stuff like this back to life. And, of course, how cool is it to think that we'll be able to see a "brand-new" Stooges short (and possibly more)? AND one that's in color? WOW!

On a related note, it's amazing to think just how fragile and sensitive old film is. That's nothing new obviously, but just the thought that this short is on film that's actually called "Nitrate" almost makes seem like it was made to be ephemeral. "Enjoy the Stooges short Mr. Phelps. The film will self-destruct in five seconds after you finish watching it."

nitrate is very fragile.
