 Looking for a movie
Hey guys,

Susan emailed me about this movie, here's the email. Do any of you guys recognize it?

when I was very young, I watched a creature double feature movie that was about an old woman that died. She had a hideous face (I don't remember the details because I was hiding under my blanket). I remember a young lady was at her bedside when she died and stole a ring off the woman's finger. The movie was about the old woman haunting her because she had taken the ring.

Does ANYONE remember this movie??? I know I didn't just imagine it.

You know what? I have a friend who has a very similar memory. If it's the same movie, it haunted him for years too (both because of how it scared him as a kid as well as because it was so difficult to figure out what movie it was all these years later). After quite a bit of research, I believe we finally figured out what it was. Unfortunately, I don't remember what it was at the moment. As soon as I remember I'll post it to see if it is the one Susan is thinking of...

Okay, I looked around and found the movie I was talking about. It's "Black Sabbath". It was an Italian horror movie made up of three seperate tales. Boris Karloff hosts the movie and stars as a vampire in one of the segments. The story about the woman and the ring is the third segment, "A Drop of Water", and was directed by Mario Bava. It's the story of a nurse who thinks a dead woman is after her because she took her ring. Check it out and see if it's the right one.

"Black Sabbath":

The entre movie can be watched on Hulu:

As far as I can tell, "Black Sabbath" appears to have been shown on CDF only once. It was on June 4, 1983. This was a period of single Creature Feature movies that would air at 2:00 after a noontime showing of a martial arts film.

BLACK SABBATH is great! The "Drop of Water" segment (and especially the old woman's face) is super-creepy.

I got to see this at the Coolidge Corner Theater a few years ago, as part of a series of Mario Bava film screenings. To see the film (especially that one segment) on the big screen in a mostly-empty theater was pretty atmospheric, to say the least.

This is out on DVD, so Susan should be able to see it without too much difficulty.

I remember being so damn scared by that particular segment of BLACK SABBATH when I was a kid..I had a Halloween mask that looked very much like that dead woman's face and I would hide it at the very back of my closet so that I couldnt see it..

Col. Manning, you're the best!

I love this movie, but didn't draw a connection. I am a HUGE bava fan all around!

Thanks so much, I will pass this on!

 Re: Looking for a movie
I only saw this once when it was on 56 as a kid, and boy did it scare me... The final story with the old lady and the ring, (I believe was the final story), has haunted me for years. Now I finally know what movie it was! Thanks!

Anyone know how to tell which DVD is the American version and which is the Italian version when buying? Also, do people prefer one over the other? I would like to get the American version because it has the creepiest story at the end, however I have read that it is a butchered version of the "better" Italian version. In the original Italian version Boris Karloff is dubbed and the movie subtitled, and not in the order that I remember/prefer... Also, I guess AIP added the Karloff intros when it was brought to America, probably because, or again I read, that they cut a bit of the *** and violence. Correct me if any of this is wrong... The Amazon.com reviews are useless because the different versions they offer tend to use reviews from other versions and you can't tell which refers to what version on most movies...

 Re: Looking for a movie
I thought the only version you could get here was the Italian one. The DVD I have as part of one of the Anchor Bay Bava boxed sets is just the Italian one. I think it was originally announced that the US version was going to be included as well, but rights issues prevented this from happening. I know that the AIP/US cut has aired on some satellite channels in the last few years (MONSTERS HD or MGM HD?) in a pristine widescreen copy. The old HBO Video VHS was the US cut, but I expect that would be pretty hard to find on any video store shelves these days.

Great! I've been helped out here a number of times and I'm glad I was able to help return the favor a bit. I know how frustrationg it can be to have a fragment of a movie stuck in your memory banks and not be able to figure out just what movie it is!
