Movie With Astronaut Being Chased Around
I remember watching a movie on TV (probably on channel 56 or 38) on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon back in the mid-80s. I know it wasn't a Creature Double Feature, but beyond that I don't know much about it. As usual, sorry for the vague details, but if I remembered more I'd probably be able to figure it out on my own...

The movie (as best I can remember) was about an astronaut who flew to a "twin earth" on the other side of the sun. The planet appeared similar to earth, but for some reason he was being chased down as a fugitive (or an "alien" I suppose). I'm not sure whether he flew to the planet on purpose for some mission or if it was a mistake. That's really about all I remember from the movie.

A while back I was trying to figure out what it was and came across Gerry Anderson's "Doppelganger" (known in the U.S. as "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun"). Based on the title and description I put it in my Netflix queue, secure in the knowledge that a long-time personal mystery had been solved. Wouldn't you know, it WASN'T the movie I had seen as a kid. I wouldn't be surprised if the movie I saw came out a while after "Doppelganger" (which was released in 1969) and was somewhat of a rip-off of it. It seemed to be a mid- to late-70s movie and may very well have been a made-for-TV affair. I can also say that it is NOT "Capricorn One" either. Does this flick ring and bells with anyone out there?

Alright, I just did a little further research and came up with one more possibility that I don't think was the movie in question. For some reason I thougth someone like Richard Anderson may have been in the movie. Obvioulsy I can't do an IMDB search for someone "like" Richard Anderson, but a check of Richard Anderson's movies shows one from 1972 called "The Astronaut". This was a TV movie and came from right about the right time, but from what I read about the story (astronaut dies on a mission to Mars and is replaced by a look-alike so the space program can claim the mision was a success) it still doesn't sound like the movie I'm thinking of. I wish "The Astronaut" was available on video so I could watch it and confirm whether it's the right one or not.

The movie you're describing sounds alot like The Stranger. It was a TV movie made in 1973 and starred Glenn Corbett. I remember liking it as a kid, but it did confuse me a bit--calling the earth Terra and the multi-moons.

MST3K did a riff on it too.

That most definitely appears to be the movie. Thank you for solving a twenty-year-old mystery Beastball! It always pays to ask here about movies that one just can't seem to put a finger on. Someone else growing up at the same time watching the same stuff on TV is bound to have the answer most of the time. I should have asked about this one a long time ago! I'm guessing that it's not available in any format, especially since it was not only a TV movie--but also a failed pilot for a TV series. At least I can finally read about all the details I forgot since watching it all those years ago...

All too happy to help, Col. Manning!
How in the heck did we survive growing up without the Internet? It truly is the information superhighway

How very true. I often comment on how much the internet has changed things from what it was like growing up as a CDF watcher in the 70s and 80s. While I miss the importance of HAVING to be sitting in front of the TV on Saturday at 1:00 if you wanted to catch CDF (in a time when you couldn't just watch it whenever you felt like it on some internet site) I have to admit that I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't simply go to IMDB and Google whenever I have a movie-related question. If I can't find the answer there I can always come here to the board and ask a community of like-minded CDF fans. How did people solve these little mysteries in the old days? I'm guessing that you'd have to go to the library and try to find a book that was related to the subject, or ask one of your friends who may or may not just happen to know the answer, or simply label the question unanswerable and forget about it (or at least try to).

"The stranger"/"Stranded in Space" isn't sounding like some great movie from what I'm reading about it at IMDB, but it's nice to know that a rare title like this can be picked up cheap AND woth the MST3k treatment to make it infinitely more entertaining!

To be sure it is NOT a great movie!
What is great, however, is that this movie is part of my childhood and I do remember watching it--and the uneasy feeling it gave me :?

I know it's not going to be a very "good" movie, but I just HAVE to see it again. I went ahead and ordered the MST3K version from CheesyFlix.com (along with six other episodes to boot). It's my first time ordering OOP MST3K episodes from them. I've been meaning to do it for a while and now I have the perfect reason! Can't wait!

I have to admit that I didn't really recall much from the movie, but I'm still pretty sure that it's the right one. I watched it a couple of weeks ago. It was so great to have a mystery solved AND to be able to watch that movie as a MST3K episode!

Thanks a lot from me too. I had been trying to remember that movie for about 30 someodd years. I saw it once when I was about 10 years old. :) Now I just have to find it.
