Excellent point astroal. I guess the reason I was thinking Friday for me was that a. it wasn't a "school night" so you didn't have to worry about getting up early the next day, and b. even after trick-or-treating you STILL had a maximum amount of time before you had to go back to school. While you could also look forward to CDF the following afternoon, I do have to agree with you that it wouldn't get much better than having an afternoon of CDF followed by trick-or-treating!
Check this out! The only year that apparently actually had a Creature Double Feature (at least that I could find) on October 31st was 1981. The movies? "Godzilla vs. Megalon" and "Godzilla on Monster Island"!

Thanks for triggering some great memories, Col. Manning! The whole month of October would be in anticipation of that very last day that seemed to take FOREVER to arrive. Then on those last few days before Halloween, the costumes would be brought down from the attic; what a great feeling to see it again in its box (the mask staring back through the clear cellophane) and to try it on! The first costume I remember having was a devil --one of those jumpsuit types with the plastic mask held by an elastic. I was probably about 5 at the time but I remember it so well. I think on Halloween day I would put the costume on right after getting home from school in excitement. Great memories!

At least between 1975 and 1984 (that's what I've researched so far. Of course there were years when Halloween would fall on a Friday (meaning that you'd be able to enjoy CDF the next afternoon, as mentioned above) and Sunday (which at least falls in the same weekend as a CDF).
