 October Movie Challenge
It's almost Halloween. This year I decided to challenge myself to watch an average of one movie a day for the entire month of October. Obviously that would be 31 movies in 31 days. Now, while I called this a "challenge", I did want to enjoy it too--so my definition of a "horror movie" is admittedly very loose. I'm not a huge fan of slasher movies and most of the horror movies from recent years. The kind of stuff I planned on watching was much more inspired by CDF than the stuff on the movie screens today. I also allowed myself to count episodes of hour-long TV shows too. This was good because I was in the process of finishing up watching the "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" series. Today I finally introduced my daughter (my "Little Monster") to "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein". Obviously a hardcore horror fan would balk at me considering this movie to be a "horror movie", but I figure it's my challenge so I'm going by my rules. At this point I have already surpassed the 31 title threshold and am now hoping to see enough movies so that, even if you discount all the TV shows (and I also have to confess thatI included a Halloween episode of "The Love Boat" too) I'll still have enough movies to win the challenge.

If anybody has any interest in seeing how the almost-completed challenge is going, check out my blog entry on it. I wrote the blog before October started, but have been regularly updating it throughout the month.

Speaking of "The Night Stalker", check to see if your library carries the two TV movies that served as pilots. As much as a like the series, I think the movies are even better.

I just recently saw the two movies too (over the summer) via Netflix. They were indeed great! As much as I can't believe that I managed to NOT see something so cool for all these years, it was also great to be able to experience it for the first time. Even though the show ended some 35 years ago it was brand new to me!

By the way, the October challenge is now over. Including all the "questionable" entries the final "score" is Monster Dad-46, October-31! I wrote another blog tonight breaking down what would have happened is various "questionable" things were not allowed.

I have it.
Long out of print and when I looked for it on eBay, the going price was $60+. I eventually found it on a website for $23. This was several years ago, so I don't know what the current demand is for this DVD.

That must have been the DVD I got from Netflix, as it did indeed have both movies on it.

Oh, and by the way, the October challenge was a smashing success! I ended up watching 46 movies/shows in the 31 days of the month. All the titles are detailed in the original blog, but I also wrote another one that discusses the results and the fact that I didn't strictly stick to true horror material.

OOH! One of the movies you saw was Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla! I caught this last year on OFF BEAT CINEMA and had been wanting to see it again. Terrible Martin & Lewis wannabe movie, but Sammy Petrillo's Jerry Lewis impersonation is scary-good. So good that Lewis threatened legal action, so this was the only movie for Mitchell and Petrillo.

That's funny. I had only heard of those guys recently and have had this movie for a few years (dollar store purchase) but just finally got around to seeing it. I was wondering how they got away with doing such a blatant Martin & Lewis ripoff while those guys were still doing their thing. It really iS a scary-good impersonation!

By the way, what's the significance of the little battleship silhouette Beastball (it is a battleship right)? It looks cool.

No significance aside for the coolness factor.

I'm what you would call a military buff-- particularly for WWII and I was looking through recognition silhouettes for planes, ships, etc. I figured "what the hey, just for sh*ts and giggles, let me put one of my favorite ship designs (the Iowa class battleship) in my sig". Maybe every now and then, I'll put a different ship or plane, etc. It's just a way to show what I'm interested in.

--of course, I may not confine myself to just WWII warships. You may find something like this:

I thought I'd add this here since we talked about it.

Picked this up on eBay last week (along with the new Zeriods comic book):
