I love this film! I recorded it onto dvd off of cable a couple years ago. (one lovely Saturday morning/afternoon, when they showed a triple feature of Sssssss, Squirm & Food of the Gods....PURE HEAVEN!!!)

I have seen it many times, but never put 2+2 together...never realized that Marjoe Gortner was a child preacher...until I recently saw the documentary MARJOE. Has anybody else seen this documentary? It is a masterpiece in it's own right! (Documentaries are my 2nd favorite genre of film...after B Horror!)

Little piece of trivia...this movie is a remake of another Bert I. Gordon movie called Village of the Giants (1965)

IMDB; Village of the Giants:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059878/

Both movies were based on the H.G. Wells novel.

Food of the Gods is one of my all-time favorites! I saw it at the Seekonk Twin drive-in when I was 5 so it has a special place in my heart.
This movie will be featured in episode 8 of the CDF series I'm working on due out this spring paired up with another 70's cult classic Bert I Gordon picture, stay tuned...

I got to see a beautiful 35mm print of FOOD OF THE GODS at the heaven-on-earth Super Drive-In Monsterama show in Pennsylvania last year (or was it the year before?). I'd never seen it before, and it was a blast seeing it on the big drive-in screen.

Can't wait to see it on "CDF", skorch!

I do recall seeing VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS on 56 way back when and liking it a lot.

I used to own a VHS of Village of the Giants...found it for $1 at the Christmas Tree Shop, of all places. Unfortunately, I lent it to someone a couple years ago, and she never returned it.

Yep, a true '70s cult classic. I remember thinking 'how cool, a new H.G. Wells' movie!' I had an older cousin, and she and her boyfriend (eventual husband) were so cool ... they bought me the Famous Monsters issue with "Food of the Gods" on the cover, and naturally took me to the old Variety Theatre here in Cleveland to see it (a year before, they took me to see "The Giant Spider Invasion"). Great memories.

I'm still curious how Ida Lupino found herself in so many films of this genre during the '70s.

I didn't know this was actually a remake of "Village of the Giants" --- got to see this now. Great Info.

I would love to see the documentary about Marjoe, I've got to see if its available for purchase anywhere. Gortner is also in another cult favorite of mine, the legendary "Starcrash - The Adventures of Stella Star", with Caroline Munro.

What a triple feature you were treated to! I wish there were more programmers out there bold enough to do things like that. Too bad there isn't a channel or two dedicated to horror/sci-fi fans (add as much degree of sarcasm as you can take with that comment).

I also love Empire of the Ants! Another classic 70's film I'm lucky to have come across on cable and recorded onto disc! I LOVE the part when all the people are lined up for their "treatment"! So good! Also, Kingdom of the Spiders starring, of course William Shatner is another favorite of mine!

To me, Village of the Giants is different than Food of the Gods, with Beau Bridges and Opie/Richie Cunningham as a child, it seemed more goofy, more of a parody, as Food of the Gods was more "serious". It isn't the same story, but of course they both have Giants, which is what's most important!!!

Ida Lupino is also in the Devil's Rain...again, starring Mr. William Shatner (and Ernest Borgnine), another classic!!! (I LOVE SHAT!)

The Marjoe documentary dvd is available on Netflix!

the devil's rain had me rolling on the floor. seeing shatner as a puritan/satanist was priceless.

kingdom of the spiders is a classic for its score alone.

i've heard rumours there was a sequel and shatner directed it but it never got released. don't know if it's just a rumour or not...

Oh, how I wish there was a sequel to Kingdom of the Spiders...remember the part when Shatner "danced" across the yard to avoid stepping on the spiders? So classic!!!

Also seeing John Travolta "melt" in the Devil's Rain! Shatner puts 200% into all his roles! In The Devil's Rain he unintentionally drools while speaking.

Off-Beat Cinema played Village of the Giants last night.

Off-Beat Cinema is on the RTN network (locally channel 10.2 out of Providence) every Saturday night at 11pm.
