ok here it is. Aired 76-78? I believe on NBC and starred Beau Bridges. It was a prime time drama and generally always started and ended with Beau and his wife talking about their plans for the day and how there day was.

That doesn't sound familiar at all. Looking at IMDB though, I see that Beau Bridges starred in a short-lived series in 1980 (a little later that your recollection, but still relatively close). It was called "United States". Read the details at IMDB to see if it could be the show. "United States": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080300/

Here's a couple little things from the Worcester Telegram from the time that "United States" premiered. First is the cover of the Sunday TV Week section that highlights new shows airing that week. Second is the "Highlights" secion of the TV listings for the day it premiered--Tuesday March 11, 1980. Attachment:

Bingo that's it! I like the show myself because it usually discussed subjects normally taboo for the time,

Glad to hear it's the right show. Always cool when a long-time mystery is solved! While I never saw the show myself, it certainly sounds like it was interesting.
