Saw it this evening with Leonor and the girls. Needless to say it was the same old stuff but with dinosaurs (they find a hidden underground cavern where they still exist) I will say this though, the 3-D was incredible! They also showed the trailer for the upcoming Disney CG 3-D 'A Christmas Carol' This looks really good.

I'm a sucker for 3-D, and I'm glad to see it rising once again (as it always has whenever another technology threatens Hollywood). I'd go to see just about anything in 3-D, were it not for the fact that the nearest theater equipped to project that way is at least an hour away.

The only 3D movie I ever saw was on TV back around 1979 or 1980. I'm pretty sure it was Revenge of the Creature (I know the gill man was in it). I think there were one or two more 3D movies on TV, but I only saw the gillman one. Can't say I was overly impressed with the effect, but I'm sure the new stuff would blow me away. I may check it out just for the 3D

I think I posted about this on the old board, but they're some pretty fond memories, so....

I was all over the 3-D TV boom in the early 80s, which coincided with the theatrical boom (FRIDAY THE 13TH 3-D, AMITYVILLE 3-D, JAWS 3-D, SPACEHUNTER, METALSTORM, PARASITE, TREASURE OF THE FOUR CROWNS, etc), brought about (as it always is) by Hollywood feeling threatened by a new technology (TV in the 50s, VCRs in the 80s, internet and video in the 00s). The first film I recall seeing was REVENGE OF THE CREATURE on 56. We had no Store 24s in our area, so you had to go to the cable company to pick up the glasses. I recall 56 running a series of tests before the film started, so you could tune your set to get maximum effectiveness from the film. They'd run a vertical split-screen where half of the image was solid green and half was solid red, and you'd be instructed via voice-over to adjust your tint control until the line between the two colors was fuzzy. Then they'd run cool shot-on-video 3-D sequences, where people threw confetti at the camera or whathaveyou, then back to the split screen. It was also advised that you watched the film with the lights on, and were at least 4 feet away from the set.

This was a huge thrill for me, and I ate it up. Around the same time 38 ran GORILLA AT LARGE in 3-D, and both films ran at least one more time on one station or the other. Later on, 38 had a night of 3-D that feature the two Three Sooges shorts that were made that way, PARDON MY BACKFIRE and SPOOKS, as well as the 3-D feature INFERNO (which I thought was dull at the time as it didn't feature any monsters and was just a straight survival tale), and maybe also GORILLA AT LARGE or REVENGE OF THE CREATURE again. I have some scans of TV GUIDE ads for this last 38 broadcast that I posted on the old board, which I can dig up and re-post if anyone's interested.

I also remember MTV running ROBOT MONSTER in 3-D on Halloween night around the time of the first round of 3-D TV broadcasts, with new color (and 3-D) shot-on-video wrap-arounds that were supposed to tie in to the film. I remember coming home from trick-or-treating and seeing this was on, then ran to get my glasses left over from one of the 56 broadcasts and watching the rest of it. Lotsa fun.

I remember the excitement build-up in the week leading to the UHF 3-D presentations and being ultimately let down that the effect on TV wasn't more impressive. One effect that did impress me was during Gorilla at Large seeing a man smoking and it looked like it was wafting off screen into the room.
I 'll never forget the presentation of Revenge of the Creature because my youngest brother was hit by a car about an hour before the movie (he was ok thank God).
Hondo starring John Wayne was also shown in 3-D on 38 back in the day I recall.

HONDO! How did I miss that one?!?! I thought I was on top of all the 3-D TV broadcasts back then. Did, dare I say it, TV GUIDE fail me?

I seem to recall hearing that this got a very limited theatrical re-release in 3-D some time within the last few years.

My first 3D experience was here in Houston back in 1983. Channel 39 was showing some Kung-fu movie in 3D so you had to go to 7-11 and pick up the glasses. It was a pretty big deal for Houston, but my father didn't believe in cable TV. His philosophy was why pay for what you can get for free. So, I was stuck watching a cruddy 3D movie on cruddy 'rabbit ears' with cruddy reception. Needless to say my first 3D TV experience was cruddy.
