 R.I.P. Garou Wolfman
I just saw the very sad news on Facebook that Magoo Gelehrter has passed away after his battle against cancer. Magoo is best known around here as Garou Wolfman, Penny Dreadful's beloved (and husband to Penny's alter ego Danielle Gelehrter in "real life"). We frequently post on the board when some icon of horror (or most any celebrity for that matter) who most of us had fond memories of while growing up in the days of CDF. I know that Magoo wasn't a member of the board, but Penny is, and it seems very appropriate to mention his passing here. Penny (and as far as I know Magoo as well) was a fellow CDF kid from back in the day. The influence of CDF (and horror hosts) was at least paritally responsible for the creation of the Penny Dreadful and Garou Wolfman characters. If it weren't for the board there's a good chance that I wouldn't have ever even known about Penny and her show. But thanks to our mutual love of CDF I did "meet" her at this board and the old one. I was also lucky enough to meet Penny, Garou and the rest of the Penny Dreadful gang in real life a number of times at the Rock and Shock show in Worcester and other personal appearances they made in the area. Despite only knowing them for a relatively short time and mainly through their show and characters I consider them to be friends.

One special memory was a few days after my father passed away in April 2011. Penny and Garou were making an appearance at a book store in Worcester. I had been planning on going and taking my daughter along (who had also met them a couple times). It turned out that the appearance fell on the day of the memorial service for my father. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to make it to the book store (or if I even should go, under the circumstances). But my daughter and I did end up making it there, and it was a very special little ray of sunshine on an otherwise depressing day. Now Garou/Magoo has also been lost to cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with Penny/Danielle and their families, friends and loved ones. R.I.P.

Here's the blog I wrote after that Worcester appearance in 2011:

Wow, I'm really sorry and sad to hear about this. I had read he was sick but since I'm not on Facebook I wasn't aware how advanced his condition was.

I had just finally met Penny after all these years at the last RI Comic Con and it was one of the highlights.

My condolences go out to her, their family and friends.

Very sad to hear this the other day, too.

We'd met Garou a few times at Rock and Shock, and he and Penny were super-cool.

Magoo even offered up some helpful advice when we started doing our show, which was cool.

Sorry to see one of the good guys going way too soon.

Very sad indeed. I met him a couple of times, real nice guy. Him and Penny were amongst the inspirations for Dante's Domicile. May he R.I.P.
