Return of original MST3K to TV (on Retro TV)!
I think this is some pretty big news. Just saw that MST3k will be returning to television! No, it's not new episodes, but it's still pretty danged cool. The show went off the air a looooooong time ago. It's strange to think of MST3K as a "classic" and "old" show, but it really is now. In the time since the original show left the air we've seen most of the cast in other similar projects like Cinematic Titanic, The Film Crew and Rifftrax. We've also seen the show slowly roll out on (rather expensive, but impressive) DVD sets over the years, and episodes that aren't available in a legitimate format can still be acquired in various places thanks to the fans who have never forgotten to "Keep circulating the tapes." (even if those "tapes" are now DVDs, mp3s and other digital formats).

With all that availability it might not really seem necessary to bring the old episodes back to TV, but I think most of us here not only love the show, but we also grew up watching all kinds of old TV shows in syndication on Boston-area TV years after those shows ended. Now, thanks to RetroTV we'll be able to once again tune in to MST3K like we used to when it was on (by tuning into a specific station at a specific time when it is airing the show). Looks like they're going to start showing MST3K on July 5th. I haven't really been watching much of RetroTV lately--most of my retro television watching has gone to MeTV instead. But I can certainly foresee myself tuning in for classic MST3K episodes!

Here's the story:

You know what, I am also finding this whole thing very impressive. Not only are the shows "old", but it would seem like there could be many issues involved in simply putting it back on TV. Just for a few examples: the shows creators/cast has splintered into various factions over the years since the show ended, the rights to the show have changed over the years, the movies featured in the shows are all individual movies which I'm sure need their own clearance before being broadcast (unless they're PD of course)... I'm not sure yet if they're going to be showing all the episodes from the full run of the show, but the article above mentions that it ran for 11 years so it would seem like they'll have access to the entire run. That would mean that they're dealing with shows from two separate networks too (yet another possible headache). Not only do I think it's neat that the show will be returning to Tv, but I think I'm going to appreciate it all the more because all of the above. Maybe they worked out some sort of package deal where they just got a ton of episodes (whether all or most of the run of the show) that they can run as they see fit, but that seems kind of unlikely for some reason.

The station is marketing MST3K as if it is the full series, but you are right that there could be episodes that cannot be aired due to contractual issues and royalties. I can only get RTV via the antenna as Verizon airs COZI TV but none of the sub-channels from WMFP. Still, this is great news!

Actually, now that you mention it, I may not even get Rtv anymore myself. Since I don't tune in very often I forgot that at least one (if not both) of the Rtv channels switched over to COZI. I'll have to check. Maybe I won't be tuning into old MST3K episodes over the air after all...

I forgot to mention that I finally got around to checking and, unfortunately, I do NOT get rTV any more. We get channel 62.1 and 62.2 and they're both COZI channels for some reason. The strange thing is that the two channels actually look different. 62.1 is very clear, and 62.2--while showing the same shows--looks darker and less clear. They seem to broadcast in different aspect ratios too for some reason. It would be so much better if there were one COZI channel and one rTV channel. Oh well, along with meTV and THIS it would be more retro entertainment than I'd be able to watch anyway I suppose.

RTV is on 62.5 and another station called The Works is on 62.4. Did you try rescanning?

My wife and I JUST finished up the last episode of "Breaking Bad" last night! We've been trying to put it off as long as possible. Such a great series.

I do need to re-scan for additional channels CDF Fan. I've tried that a few times trying to get that channel 25.2 movie channel, but it never seems to work for some reason. I'm always afraid that I'll end up losing channels rather than gaining them if I re-scan! But I'll try it out again.

It appears that RTV is not being carried as a substation anymore in New England. Since WCVB, WHDH and WFXT all carry subs, this would be a great time for WBZ to pick up RTV.
