Aah, "Shock Waves" (1977)! The classic Nazi-zombie movie. As one of the tag lines states, "Once, they were almost human". John Carradine, Peter Cushing, Brooke Adams AND Nazi-zombies...what more can you ask for?

Someone was asking about this movie in the "Movie Help" forum recently. I remember watching it on WLVI 56 back in the 80s and being terrified by it back then. I bought a VHS copy of the movie in 1991. A couple of years ago I rented it from Netflix (at the moment it's not available at Netflix anymore and can only be put in the "Save" section of a queue). A couple of weeks ago I was listening to an old audio tape recording I made of a broadcast of "Shock Waves" on channel 56 and decided that it was time to watch the movie again. Unfortunately, our VCR has seemingly reached the end of the line--it ate my tape of "Shock Waves" like a Nazi-zombie might eat a helpless victim (though I should mention that the zombies in "Shock Waves" seem to be only interested in killing people--not eating them). The upside is that--since I couldn't get it from Netflix--I finally broke down and ordered a brand new DVD copy of the movie from deepdiscount.com. It arrived yesterday, so I can officailly call this a "movie I remember and now have on DVD"!

Shock Waves" at IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076704/

A short trailer on YouTube:

A longer German language trailer:

For a relatively small-time movie, "Shock Waves" sure has a lot of tag lines. In addition to "Once, they were almost human" there is also "The deep end of horror", "Beneath the living... Beyond the dead..." and "It is something...else".

Although I have replaced much of my VHS movies with DVDs, I still have a large tape collection of all sorts of things I recorded over the years I haven't replaced. You can still buy VCRs...top of the line ones for incredibly low prices. I bought a 4 head Panasonic VCR at Best Buy for under $40.

 Re: Shock Waves
I'm considering getting one of those DVD/VCR combos at some point. But my "Shock waves" tape was ancient, and I'd been wanting to get the DVD for a while anyway--so it was as good a time as any.

This movie really is a hoot. And it's not all that gory or graphic either. I mean, it WAS shown on channel 56 after all (and apparently with not too much cut out). Watched it a couple of weeks ago and it really stood up well (in my opinion).

Read more about "Shock Waves" and other nazi-zombie movies at this thread from the Movie Help forum:

you can also get dvd burner/vcr combos for pretty cheap and burn your vhs tapes to dvds if you're so inclined.

i really wish this flick was available on netflix. it's sitting in my saved section. sigh.

I thought I remembered seeing "Shock Waves" on this website, http://cultrararevideos.com/index.html but it turned out to be "Death Ship" instead. Interestingly he just uploaded the 1971 classic Willard. Now that movie terrified me as a kid.

 Re: Shock Waves
You know, I still haven't seen "Willard" (or at least I haven't seen more than part of it). I might watch it now that I'm thinking about it, but it's too bad I can't go back in time and watch it as a kid. I've been watching a lot of stuff reminiscent of the great stuff I used to see on TV back in the CDF days. It's great fun, but I'm realizing that it would be so much better to have watched these movies as a kid. I try to keep my mind as young as possible and be in the right frame of mind, but the simple fact that I just said that shows that I'm thinking too much about it to have that true "child-like" experience. :x

Astroal, keep "Shock waves" in your saved section. I had it there until I bought it, but the funny thing is that they USED to have it. It was one of the first things I got from Netflix when I re-started my membership a few years ago. The whe nI went to take it out again it was gone. Hopefully they just need to get another copy and haven't decided against carrying it. I mean, it's BARELY about nazis, and if they're worried about the violence and gore, there's not really much of that stuff compared to most of the horror movies coming out these days.

 Re: Shock Waves
This is one of those flicks that I saw as a kid on Saturday afternoon Boston TV that helped develop in me a love of "daylight horror", flicks that have creepy stuff happen in broad daylight. PHANTASM has a bit of this, too.

Love me that SHOCK WAVES.

 Re: Shock Waves
"Daylight Horror"? ...Smells like a possible new thread to me! Of course there are a number of movies that feature the horror in the daylight...even though it's SUPPOSEDLY at night--via the ever popular day-for-night shot! I know that's not what you're talking about Mark, but had to mention it.

 Re: Shock Waves
For me it was the combination of seeing films where scary stuff happened during the day, combined with the fact that I was watching it during the day. I always thought that having a completely clear view of some horrible thing coming at you and being frozen in terror while you can fully see the horror you're about to succumb to was scarier than the thing creeping in the shadows, but maybe that's just me.

 Re: Shock Waves
No that makes sense. Watching something scary at night that's about something scary happening at night is a natural. And it's something I'm sure we can all relate to. But a combination of something scary happening in a scary movie that takes place during the day...while you're watching it during the day--that is a bit more rare I'd think. "Shock Waves" definitely fits that bill perfectly. I do remember watching it at night too as a channel 56 Eight O'Clock movie, but it was an extra-cool specimen when it was on in the afternoon! Night-time frights are easy to come by.

I'm super-excited to see that SHOCK WAVES is going to be featured as part of this year's DRIVE-IN SUPER MONSTER-RAMA at the Riverside Drive-In in Vandergrift, PA, as part of a two-day Peter Cushing Centenary!
