Missed it on YouTube. That didn't take long to disappear. Oh well...

Re: Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers)
A kind soul who may or may not be a member of the board (and who will remain nameless to protect the innocent) sent me a copy of "Yamato" a while back. I ended up watching it with one of my old friends who also watched the show when we were growing up. Very impressive! Thought it was a well-made movie all around. My main complaint had to do with the tinkering with the characters. Not only were the battles obviously inspired by the recent "Battlestar Galactica" show, the character "adjustments" seemed to be borrowed too. I wouldn't have minded seeing everything exactly the same as I remembered them from watching the show as a kid. I suppose that's unrealistic, and I was onboard with most of the changes (Dr. Sane being a woman instead of a freaky-looking guy was odd, but okay). The treatment of Desslock and the Gamilons was also odd, but understandable for the sake of making a movie that didn't seem "silly". I missed IQ-9, but it was pretty cool how they kinda-sorta and him in there, and then all of a sudden he was REALLY there for a few moments (you'll know what I mean when you se it). However (and I don't think this will spoil it too much for anyone who hasn't seen it) I didn't really like the fact that they more-or-less got rid of Nova. She was in there, but was Starbuck-ized--turned into a badass fighter pilot with a past. It was a fine character, but I miss the Nova I loved so much as a kid. The ending was a bit extreme, but I suppose they were going all out and putting everything onscreen for the sake of having an exciting and dramatic movie. I won't go into the specifics of the ending so as not to spoil anything, but overall it was an excellent flick for someone who grew up watching the show.

If they ever put out a DVD release of "Yamato" with an English dub I'd love for them to put on separate tracks where you can choose a straight-up dub, and one where they call all the characters by the names we are used to as Americans (Wildstar, Captain Avatar, Mark Venture...). That would be neat!

My Blu-Ray just came in from Hong Kong
One of the Special Features is seeing the Yamato flying over several different Japanese cities.

English subs? Cool! I didn't expect to hear that. Certainly makes it more worth picking up. If it ever gets a U.S. release I wonder if they'll add U.S. city flyovers as a special feature.

I haven't seen this yet, but am curious if they show the construction of the Yamoto. If I recall correctly, in the cartoon they show the reclaiming of the old battleship Yamoto on the dry ocean bed and its transformation into the Space Cruiser.
