The Wrath of.....John Harrison??

New Image From Star Trek Into Darkness + UPDATE: Villain Name Revealed

http://trekmovie.com/2012/12/10/new-image-from-star-trek-into-darkness-features-cumberbatch-villain-w-kirk-spock/

Paramount has just released a new image from Star Trek Into Darkness. This wasn’t in the trailer and it features Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and a certain Mr. Cumberbatch. UPDATE: Paramount has provided photo caption with villain named. Spoilers. Check it out below.

Check out the brand new image from Star Trek Into Darkness. Note updated caption.

Image
(Left to right) Zachary Quinto is Spock, Benedict Cumberbatch is John Harrison and Chris Pine is Kirk in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS from Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions.

The new shot is not something from the ‘announcement’ trailer released last week nor will it be seen in the 9-min preview showing with Hobbit IMAX, but it might be from the ‘teaser’ trailer which comes out with the (non-IMAX) The Hobbit this weekend.

Quick thoughts:

Cumberbatch is seen in what is apparently the brig (not seen in the 2009 Star Trek movie)

Cumberbatch doesn’t seem all that maniacal/angry about it

They are separated by glass (like what was seen in Japanese trailer)

Cumberbatch is clearly wearing a Starfleet uniform

Ship appears to be at red alert

So now who do you think the villain is?

********************************************************
GAH! John Harrison? Either this is an alias and he's someone familiar like Khan, or JJ has really pulled one over all of us!

WOW! The information is coming in fast and furious now!

Alice Eve’s Character + 7 More Star Trek Into Darkness Spoilers Revealed At Bad Robot Visit

http://trekmovie.com/2012/12/10/alice-eve-character-7-more-star-trek-into-darkness-characterstory-details-revealed-at-bad-robot-visit/

Today Star Trek Into Darkness producer/director JJ Abrams invited the press (including TrekMovie) to visit Bad Robot HQ in Santa Monica, CA. While there the media could chat with folks behind and in front of the camera as well as get a closer look at elements of the movie. During the day TrekMovie picked up on a number of new character and story tidbits. Find out what’s new below but beware of spoilers.

8 SPOILERS REVEALED AT BAD ROBOT STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS DAY

1. Alice Eve is playing Carol Marcus

It is confirmed that Alice Eve is playing Carol Marcus. TrekMovie was first to report that (contrary to reporting from Variety) Eve would be playing a character from canon, and that character was Kirk’s former love (and mother to his son) from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, played by Bibi Besch. In Wrath of Khan Marcus was a civilian scientist, but TrekMovie has confirmed that in Into Darkness she is a member of Starfleet and a science officer assigned to the USS Enterprise with the rank of lieutenant.

Image
Alice Eve (L) steps into the role played by Bibi Besch in Star Trek II (R)

2. Benedict Cumberbatch Really is ‘John Harrison’

As reported earlier today, Paramount released a new image of featuring Benedict Cumberbatch from Into Darkness and the official caption provided identified his character as "John Harrison." After all the debate many fans have been scratching their heads over this name asking, who is John Harrison? Some have suggested that this name could just be a placeholder used for marketing purposes, however TrekMovie can confirm that Cumberbatch’s character is called Harrison in the film.

Image
Meet John Harrison – Into Darkness’ Villain

One of the reasons fans are scratching their heads is because producer/co-writer Roberto Orci had previously stated that Cumberbatch was playing a character from Star Trek’s canon. Clearly ‘John Harrison’ is not a well known character from Star Trek’s canon. Tune in tomorrow to find out what both Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci had to say about this discrepancy.

3. Joseph Gatt Plays Character Named ‘GATT2000′

11 months ago TrekMovie reported that British actor Joseph Gatt was cast in the Star Trek film. During the event TrekMovie learned Gatt appears in the film with the character name "GATT2000." (unsure on the spelling) The character will be seen as a bald humanoid but with some kind of technology built into his head. It wasn’t entirely clear, but it is possible that he could be an android or possibly a human with technological enhancements.

Image
Imagine this guy but with a sort of blue flashing gizmo built into back of his head

4. Pike (probably) gets out of his chair

This one isn’t certain, but pretty certain. When we last saw Bruce Greenwood in the 2009 Star Trek movie he was in a wheelchair due to his injuries sustained under Nero’s torture. This chair was an homage to the original Pike who was seen in a beeping chair in the original series. While Pike was not seen in the 9-minute preview or the upcoming domestic teaser trailer, if you looked closely at a display of props at the Bad Robot event you could spot a cane featuring the Starfleet logo. TrekMovie tried to get Greenwood to spill the beans but all he would offer is joke "maybe I use the cane to hit people from my chair." However, in this case I am going out on a limb and saying Greenwood gets out of his chair, something the actor had previously said he hoped would be the case for this movie.

Image
Pike last seen in chair in Star Trek (2009)…probably upgrades to cane in ‘Into Darkness’

5. Klingons faces (and foreheads) will be revealed.

In the deleted scenes for the 2009 Star Trek film, no Klingons ever removed their helmets. However that will change for Star Trek Into Darkness. It was revealed that two of the actors playing Klingons will remove their helmets. The Klingon makeup designs were on display and they were very much in line with post Star Trek: The Motion Picture ridged forehead Klingon look with some minor differences. Probably the biggest new feature was how these Klingons adorned their ridges with ring piercings. There was also a subtle homage to original series design Klingons with devilish goateees. It was also revealed that there were twelve additional actors playing Klingons, but they keep their helmet/masks on.

Image
Klingon helmet/mask style from 2009 Star Trek also used in ‘Into Darkness’ but this time we will see what’s underneath

6. It’s Qu’noS

In TrekMovie’s shot-by-shot analysis of the announcement trailer released last week a planet was identified to have Klingon buildings (where Cumberbatch’s character beats up some Klingons). At the event today it was revealed that scene takes place on Qu’noS, the home world of the Klingon Empire.

Image
Qu’noS is lovely this time of year

7. Chekov will wear both gold and red tunics

In the 9-minute IMAX preview (shown to the press last night) Anton Yelchin’s Chekov was seen at his traditional bridge station wearing his regular gold tunic. However, in the upcoming teaser trailer (shown to the press today) Chekov can be spotted running down a hallway wearing a red tunic. Since the 9-minutes was from the beginning of the film, it could be that at some point Chekov gets reassigned.

Image
Chekov as seen in 2009 Star Trek (w/ gold shirt) returns to his post for ‘Into Darkness’ but will also be seen in red shirt

8. Keenser is back

And one last new detail…Star Trek Into Darkness will feature the return of Scotty’s loyal diminutive alien side-kick Keenser. Deep Roy has returned to play the part he first inhabited in the 2009 Star Trek film.

Image
Deep Roy as Keenser from 2009′s Star Trek – and he’s back for ‘Into Darkness’

More to come from Bad Robot visit

These tidbits are just part of what was learned at the Bad Robot event. Over the next day or two TrekMovie will report more on what was shown, along with quotes and comments from actors, producers and some of the other crew who are making this film.

I have to say that this is all very interesting stuff. Some of it might not amount to much in the long run, but it's interesting just the same. I think that we have to take all this pre-release teasing as part of the whole picture of the movie. Abrams seems to be having fun making this even more of an event than it has to be. Could he have been the one behind all the Khan rumors? Has he orchestrated all of this pre-show entertainment precisely as he wanted it to be? I guess we'll just have to stay tuned and find out! Thanks again for all the information Beastball!

Glad to post what I can find. There's a long analysis of the 9 minute preview over at trekmovie.com. I'm torn between posting all that over here now, or waiting for the actual footage to hopefully show up on the 'net (and post that).

Oh well, if anyone wants to "read all about it" now, here's the link:

Re: Star Trek into Darkness (2013)
OK, I just finished watching the 9 minute preview, which I obtained through "nefarious means" (bit torrent), and yes, it was quite exciting and action filled. It really does whet one's appetite for this movie and I'm praying that this movie's villain to have more depth to him than Nero (which really shouldn't be too hard).

Looking forward to seeing the movie and that probably will be the IMAX 3D version.

If anyone wants to see this preview now, PM me and I will give you the web address to download it. Bear in mind you will need a Bit Torrent program installed in your computer and also the footage was taken by someone with a hand held camera--so there's people's heads at the bottom of the screen, some talking, and minor movement of the camera. Also, the footage is supposed to be viewed with 3D glasses at the theatre, so it's a tiny bit blurry at times, but you can still see whats going on. (Actually, some scenes are quite clear too!).

Official trailer now up:

OK, I had to update the youtube link since the previous upload was banned by Paramount. I have learned that they did this because iTunes/Apple/Quicktime had exclusive rights to the trailer for the first 24 hours of its release. Now that the 24 hours have passed, the trailer is now (legally) available on youtube.

Also, since the images go by so quickly in the trailer, (like every other movie trailer) trekmovie.com as a shot-by-shot analysis of all the images so you can see exactly what's going on:

Re: Star Trek into Darkness (2013)
While it's always visually stunning, why do they feel they have to keep destroying the poor Enterprise? I suppose they'd say that it's being done for the "first" time in this movie--being an alternate take on the Trek universe and all. But still...

Re: Star Trek into Darkness (2013)
Destroying the Enterprise has almost become cliché for Star Trek movies just like having a villain bent on revenge, or the Earth needs saving. It's feels like they have these same three or four plot devices written down on little pieces of paper and then put into a hat. Then the director sticks his hand in and pulls one out to use for the next movie. Sometimes he'll feel ambitious and pulls two out to use ;-)

Brazil Star Trek Into Darkness Press Screening Reveals Big Spoilers + Peter Weller’s Character

http://trekmovie.com/2013/03/07/brazil-star-trek-into-darkness-press-screening-reveals-big-spoilers-peter-wellers-character/

*STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS SPOILERS*

Brazilian site Judao.com.br has a report from a press screening for Star Trek Into Darkness from Sau Paulo which was presented by producer Bryan Burk. 38 minutes of the movie was shown, mostly from the beginning of the film. TrekMovie has confirmed that the event did happen and that the report is accurate.

Below are some highlights from the report

From the extended beginning of the film…

--Opening sequence (previewed at IMAX theaters in December) has been reordered to have Nibiru Volcano sequence now opens the film followed by title card and then the scenes in London and at the hospital

--Nibiru mission ends with Kirk rescuing Spock by violating the prime directive by revealing the Enterprise to Nibiru natives so he can beam Spock out of the Volcano

--Kirk has a scene in bed (back in San Francisco) in bed with two "cat women"

--Kirk makes mention of hoping to get assigned to a "five year mission" (implying that the famed five year mission hasn’t started yet for the time he has been captain)

--Kirk is demoted for violating prime directive on Nibiru, loses command of Enterprise with Pike to take over command Kirk as first officer

--Pike wanted to send Kirk back to Academy but was convinced (possibly ordered?) to make Kirk first officer of Enterprise by Admiral Marcus (played by Peter Weller)

--Spock assigned to another ship

--The "father" character uses his Starfleet ring as a bomb (dropping it into water for a reaction) and destroys a facility (in London)

--London attack leads to big meeting of Starfleet captains which itself is attacked by John Harrison, resulting in Pike being injured…Harrison transport away

Later scenes in the film….

--Enterprise severely damaged falling to Earth with Spock in command ordering evacuation

--Kirk and Scott seen in Engineering trying to stabilize ship

--Later Spock scene beaming down to San Francisco and starting long chase with Harrions

--Eventually Spock meets up with Harrison and engages in a fight

You can visit Judao.com.br to read the full report but it is written in Portuguese so you will have to translate it.

Watch: New Alternate Teaser Trailer For Star Trek Into Darkness

http://trekmovie.com/2013/03/09/watch-new-altnernate-teaser-trailer-for-star-trek-into-darkness/

New Star Trek Into Darkness Teaser #2 (aka "kids teaser")

Here is the new teaser trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness which is showing this weekend with Oz The Great and Powerful. The trailer is about a 50/50 mix of new footage combined with stuff seen in the IMAX preview and/or other trailers or the Super Bowl commercial.

This appears to be an unofficial release, however it is very high quality and not taken with a camera in theaters. It is possible that it may get removed from YouTube. As we reported before, Paramount sees this trailer as being the one that is more "kid-friendly." If they follow the same pattern they did with the more kid-friendly trailer for the 2009 Star Trek film, the trailer may not be made available on the official site but could get aired on kid’s TV, like the Kid’s Choice Awards on Nickelodeon, which is what they did in 2009. The Kids Choice Awards airs on Nickelodeon on March 23rd.

And as TrekMovie reported earlier this week, the full (longer) theatrical trailer will be released in 3 weeks with G.I. Joe: Retaliation on March 29th. If Paramount follows their usual patter, that should be available exclusively on iTunes the following Monday April 1st and then via YouTube and elsewhere by Tuesday April 2nd.

Analysis coming up!

TrekMovie will have the usual shot-by-shot analysis of this trailer coming soon.

*HERE IS THE LINK TO THE ANALYSIS*:

Re: Star Trek into Darkness (2013)
Wow. Thank you once again for all your collating and sharing of data Beastball. It's amazing to think that after all this time, all of a sudden we're only about two months away from the film's release. The first Abrams' "Star Trek" seems like it came out decades ago, but it's funny tho think we were going through this same process while waiting for that one. As I've mentioned before, sometimes I almost enjoy the build-up and pre-release dissection of a highly-snticipated movie like this to the actual release. All of a sudden all the mysteries and questions are answered and it becomes "just another movie", to some extent.
