So now that Disney owns Lucasfilm they plan on doing SW sequels.
I'm very cautiously optimistic.

well it would be hard to imagine them being worse than the prequels.

That's awesome! I was thinking about that and wondering if Disney would indeed add Leia to their stable of cash cow princesses. Wouldn't surprise me at all. As far as the sequels, I have no choice but to be cautiously optimistic too. There's no way that the people at Disney can possibly not be aware of how much most long-term SW fans disliked what Lucas did with the prequels. I suppose that they ARE Disney and might see the kid-friendly aspect of the prequels, but the new ones just HAVE to be better, don't they? We'll see.

Regardless of what ends up happening with the sequels (or if they even end up getting made), it's an exciting thought. The idea of the prequels certainly seemed like an amazing possibility when announced (hard to imagine not knowing how they turned out). After they were all done it kind of looked like there was no chance of the other three movies ever being made (and not a heck of a lot of interest from fans either). With all of Lucas' re-doing everything to death, the endless merchandise, the animated series and everything else I feel a little "Star-Wars-ed out", but it should certainly be interesting (if nothing else) just watching how everything unfolds from the Disney/Star Wars announcement to whatever eventually transpires. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this forum for new details as they come out!

Here's something from Yahoo! about some of the possibilities.

http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/movie-talk/star-wars-returns-rumor-roundup-221654367.html

First off, why is it considered odd (even by Mark Hamill) that the next trilogy would cover episodes Vii, Viii and IX? If they are indeed going to make another trilogy, wouldn't those three be the obvious choices after covering the first six (albeit out of order)? I suppose some young whippershappers might complain that the old George Lucas story line is old, obsolete, lame and passe and that they should just do something completely new with the franchise. Even if they do go with something totally new, I'm sure the movies would still be called Episodes Vii, Viii and IX.

Second, how about the possibility that this article mentions about using "Avatar"-type technology to make the new movies "starring" the old Luke, Leia and Solo that we know so well from the original trilogy? Can you imagine the controversy that would stir up? While I'm not a big fan of CGI and other new computerized special effects, they are what they are and one certainly can't expect to see a new Star Wars movie without them. Painted backgrounds, green screens and miniatures won't be heavily used in these movies. It certainly would be possible to recreate the main characters, and that technology would enable filmmakers to do something that the Star Trek movies weren't able to do: give us the original characters we grew up with, looking like we remember them (ignoring the ravages of time), and even being played (or at least voiced) by the same actors! It's an interesting idea--whether one likes it or hates it.

I also wonder if they'd consider doing something a little less high-tech, like featuring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in the movies at some point when their characters would be as old as the actors are in real life. It's something that really couldn't have been done in the prequels, but now it could at least be considered (whether it's a good or bad idea).

It will also be interesting to see what kind of input Lucas ends up having. I know he's supposedly not going to be involved, but do you think that's really possible? He might have made a mess of things over the past couple of decades, but he DID create this whole universe that we all love so much in the first place.

Lots to think about...

i would rather see mark hammil as he is now. he could be playing a jedi master and it could follow a story with him and his students.

ugh i would not like the avatar thing at all. too weird.

It should be a fun ride seeing how this all unfolds!

I'd definitely like to see Hamill playing Luke as an aged Jedi master. Of all the original cast I'll bet he'd be the first one to jump onboard. Carrie Fisher maybe. I'd bet that it would be very tough to sell it to Harrison Ford--though he DID re-up as Indy a few years back...

Re: Star Wars ep 7 and beyond
This quote from Lucas puzzled me:
Quote:
“It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.”

Couldn't he have done that without selling the whole kit and kaboodle? Couldn't he have simply hired other people to take over the duties and still retain ownership? Another thing that puzzles me is the money. I thought Lucas already had more money than he could hope to begin to spend. What the hell is he going to do with an additional $4 Billion that he couldn't already do? When you have more money than you could ever spend, doesn't its value lose meaning to you, and acquiring more becomes irrelevent?

According to those articles, it sounded like he was already in the process of continuing the Star Wars saga even before he sold everything. Those meetings with Hamill and Fisher took place last August. So why sell?

**************************
Maybe now we'll finally get new HD releases of the original trilogy in their original form....and dare I mention the Holiday Special?

Guess I was wrong about Harrison Ford. According to this article he's "very interested" in reprising the role that made him famous. Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are supposedly also interested, but that's not really as surprising to me.

Me too. Mixing the original cast people (other than C-3P0, R2-D2 and the like) in would be very nostalgic moves. Whether that translates to great moviemaking or crap I have no idea. I certainly HOPE that these flicks will be good. Of course, it's all out of our hands, so all we can do for the next few years while they are planned/written/negotiated/signed/finances/filmed/edited and released is strap ourselves in and try to enjoy the ride!

Gonna be weird not hearing that 20th Century Fox fanfare when the movie starts. I'm so accustomed to hearing it for Star Wars movies.

I happened to catch South Park last night on the Comedy Channel. Nice takeoff on the election with a tie-in to the Star Wars franchise sale to Disney.
