 The Lone Ranger
Anyone interested in this movie?
Looks similar in tone to the Pirates films which I think are great summer popcorn flix. I'm going to try to catch it at the drive-in as there's something special to me about seeing movies set in the old west that way.

 Re: The Lone Ranger
I was never really a Lone Ranger fan growing up and everything I heard about the 1981 movie was just terrible. MeTV ran a special Sunday Showcase for the Lone Ranger TV show last weekend but I wasn't interested.
As for the upcoming movie, Tonto looks to be really different (as in strange) compared to what came before. He almost looks like what I see as a Medicine Man. Wish I had a pic handy. The stunts I saw in the previews look over-the-top--pretty much like in any action movie nowadays. I'll wait to read what people think of it before I decide to see it myself.

Yeah, I vaguely remember catching it from time to time on TV as a kid but like the George Reeves Superman it never captivated me like more contemporary shows of the 70's.

I'm going to try to catch it Thursday at the Rustic (weather permitting) paired with Monsters U but would have preferred Despicable Me 2.

 Re: The Lone Ranger
I was never a major Lone Ranger fan as a kid, but did watch the CBS cartoon and liked the 1981 LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER movie. Saw it in the theater and my mother sent away for the Cheerios fan club/Official Deputy" kit, which came with a certificate, a plastic Lone ranger eye mask, and a deputy badge. Also had the board game, come to think of it. So, I'd say I had a respect, if not a love, for the character, which is a lot more than I can say for the new LONE RANGER movie. The new flick treats the main character as an idiot for all but the last 20-30 minutes, showing Tonto as the brains of the operation, and even then treating him like a kook. It wavers back and forth between being a grim western and goofy comedy, sometimes within the same scene, is way too long (2.5 hours), and has only two action scenes (despite being sold as an action film) that bookend the film. The first is a little whimsical, while the second is so overblown it's ridiculous.

So yeah, for me, the new flick was a dud.

Funny enough, DARK SHADOWS I liked, with a couple of reservations.

Go figure.

A co-worker who grew up loving THE LONE RANGER just saw the new one yesterday, and said the last half-hour made up for the rest of the film for him. He's a fan of Jerry Bruckheimer action films (which I'm generally not), so for him the over-the-top final action sequence made it worth his while.
