 THIS TV in Boston
Hey gang,

So, maybe I'm a little late on this, but yesterday I discovered a channel on Comcast that I hadn't noticed before: I believe it's number 297 - THIS TV Boston! I looked them up online and they are part of Channel 7 but are listed as in independent station, but Holy Crap!!! This might be the channel to get a CDF-Type Show on the air!! Check out their schedule:

Great find there Roj, unfortunately I don't have Comcast so I can't enjoy this :(
I like how the have some old 56 type movie programming on the weekend with Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello movies on Sunday, very cool.
Maybe there's hope yet, I wonder if Ernie is aware of this?

This link shows other channel Numbers which might apply to your cable or satellite provider:

http://research.backchannelmedia.com/st ... _num=19598

Also, WHDH's main page lists it as Digital Channel 7-2, so this might be one that can be received with one of those new fangled Digital receivers. It MUST be a broadcast. I have one of those small flat-screen TV's in my kitchen that also gets the digital channels, so I will see if it gets 7-2 when I get home today (for example, while on Comcast WSBK is channel 14, if you go to number 38 and advance a bit you get the Digital Channel 38 signal - I forget if it's like 38-1 or something, depending if number 38 is already in use as a cable channel).

I put an inquiry in to WHDH about trying to pitch a CDF or Horror Host-type show to them, so hopefully they'll respond positively!!!

Wow, that's pretty cool Roj! I don't have cable so I obviously can't tune in, but something like this gives me that much more reason to consider shelling out the bucks. Have you watched it much yet? If so, how is it? It would be cool to see a few Saturday morning cartoons in there, but overall it's a pretty great retro-type schedule.

And it would indeed be nice to see a CDF-type movie block on Saturdays too. While no one ever seems to be interested in reviving the show (besides Ernie and everyone here of course), one factor is in its favor. While Channel 7 doesn't seem to be interested in putting CDF back on channel 56 regularly (the obvious first choice) snd since there could be an issue with using the name Creature Double Feature if an independent like channel 38 had interest, this channel could be the perfect spot. It certainly doesn't seem to be reliant on advertising money (judging by the programming) and it is owned by channel 7 (who should also control the rights to the name--if there are any--because they also own channel 56!). I mean, if they were to put up a stink about channel 38 using the name (debatable in itself), what complaint could they have if a channel that they own used it? Hmmmm...

(By the way, I was writing this message as you posted your last comment about pitching CDF to WHDH Roj. Sorry for any confusion--I'm a slow typist  )

Geez, I'd forgotten that they owned 56!!! I didn't even mention it in my email to them, although I did cite CDF and pointed them to this forum as well as the main CDF tribute site. If that's the case, it might be a heck of a lot easier to get CDF back on the air!! Let's hope they contact me soon about it. Even if we got something different going, at least we'd have SOMETHING to watch other than reality shows...

Look at that stupid MyTV channel (which I think is Channel 50 from NH, right?). They play nothing but COPS and Paid Programming. What is THAT all about???????

Glen, even if you don't have cable, you must have one of those digital tuner boxes by now, right?? I would imagine that you can get 7-2 on it since they are broadcasting it, just not on UHF but in a digital format...

 Re: THIS TV in Boston
I'm starting to feel optimistic once again. While I'm sure everyone would love to see Creature Double Feature return to channel 56 at 1:00 and 2:30 on Saturday afternoons, it's probably just never going to happen. Likewise, while channel 38 may seem like a viable option to us fans here at the board (an indepentent, local channel that showed plenty of great shows and movies itself in the 70s and 80s), I'm sure the folks at channel 38 would look at us as like we had two heads if we tried to pitch the idea to them. This cable channel though really seems like it could be a good possibility though. Who knows, if they were to take a chance on it and it ended up taking off, maybe channel 7 would re-think the idea of putting it on channel 56--where it really belongs. I may be just dreaming...but it's a good dream isn't it?

NBC Weather Plus
Programming Note

NBC WeatherPlus on Comcast channel 297 (and all other cable providers) has been terminated. NBC's purchase of The Weather Channel made the whole WeatherPlus venture obsolete. So now instead of competing with The Weather Channel, we are now all part of the same family.

I'm assuming that WHDH did not want to lose the channel and found a way to show low cost TV episodes and movies. Regardless of the reason I was excited to see this last week when I was channel surfing. I'm waiting to see if Fireball 500 will be shown since they seem to like Frankie Avalon movies.

After 6/12/09:

Channel 38 WSBK-TV will continue digital broadcasts on its current pre-transition channel number, 39. However, through the use of PSIP, digital television receivers will display WSBK-TV's virtual channel as 38.

Channel 56 WLVI-TV will continue digital broadcasts on its current pre-transition channel number, 41. However, through the use of PSIP, digital television receivers will display WLVI's virtual channel as 56.

Channel 25 WFXT will continue its digital broadcasts on its current pre-transition channel number, 31. However, through the use of PSIP, digital television receivers will display WFXT's virtual channel as 25.

 Re: THIS TV in Boston
You know, it never occurred to me before this thread that the switch to digital could very well be just what a CDF revival needs. We already know that none of the established channels are interested (though I see no reason to stop letting them know that there are people who are interested). There was some thought given to starting it up on a local public access channel. This is probably feasible, but not many people would be able to see it, unless the show could be "syndicated" like Saturday Fright Special and Shilling Shockers, or the channel it was on had a website that streamed its programs. On the other hand, with all these digital channels suddenly becoming available and with established channels getting the opportunity to increase the number of channels they can offer through digital signals, AND the fact that these new channels would have to have SOMETHING on all the time... Maybe, just maybe someone would be interested in reviving CDF on a regular basis (and it shouldn't cost a lot of money, like Ernie has to pay when buying the time for his occassional CDF specials). This "THIS TV" channel's schedule is an early indication of the special kind of programming that might be possible very soon! Someone MIGHT even be able to start a Sci-Fi-type channel that could actually resemble what I'm sure everyone was hoping the Sci-Fi channel was going to be when it first came on the air...

 Re: THIS TV in Boston
Okay, so I stupidly jumped the gun before realizing that Ch. 56 was OWNED by WHDH and sent them an inquiry. This is the response I got:

Hi Roger,

To address your questions:

1) THIS TV is not an independent station owned by WHDH; it is a classic movie and TV show channel in partnership with MGM Studios.
2) In past years, particularly during Halloween, Ernie Boch Jr. sponsored back to back Halloween-themed Creature Double Feature movies. However, if these features are not sponsored, we do not air CDF.
3) Thank you for providing us with your information. We will contact you if we are interested in a partnership.

Thank you for your email.

Viewer Relations
WHDH-7NBC/CW56
7 Bulfinch Place
Boston, MA 02114

So, basically 56 is admitting that they are only in it for the money and don't even REALIZE the potential revenue they could generate with a loyal fanbase such as us. In fact, I found their response to be very snippy and clearly whoever wrote it was irritated with CDF emails. It's really just too bad that they've got they're heads so far up their bottoms that they can't even see the potential in trying to get people to actually watch their channel on a regular basis. They will ONLY do it if someone buys the timeslot. Why should they actually create ANY original programming when they can sell off the time to someone who will do it for them??

But Glen brings up a good point in that unlike the Jupiter 2, all hope may NOT be lost! We just have to find the right person in the right position at the right station in this digital age to get something going....

 Re: THIS TV in Boston
Okay, here's a quick follow up and there just MAY be hope! I did some research on THIS TV and here's what I found:

From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_TV -

"This TV (also referred to as "This TV Network" or just "this" in on-air promotions) is a general entertainment television network designed for digital television subchannels. The network is a joint venture between film/TV studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Chicago-based Weigel Broadcasting Co., and launched on November 1, 2008.

The "This TV" name was chosen as a branding and marketing avenue for the network and its stations, with proposed slogans such as "THIS is the place for movies," "THIS is what you're watching," and "It doesn't get better than THIS!"."

Go to the wikipedia page for all the info, but suffice it to say that the guy who created this ALSO created MeTV, which if you don't know airs Svengoolie's show in Chigago!!!!! I had contacted them a couple of weeks ago and they said MeTV didn't have the rights to broadcast in Boston, but since it's the same producer...there's a possibility that we can get something going which would basically be ABOVE the heads of WHDH.... Keep your fingers crossed and I'll get right on it!!

Thanks for posting the "This TV" (dumb name) schedule.

My GOD, that's some fun-looking programming! It's like looking at a TV GUIDE from the late 70s/early 80s! Fun old shows and semi-obscure old movies. I'd be all over that station if our cable company carried.

Best of luck Roj on your efforts to get a CDF-type show on there.

 Re: THIS TV in Boston
I'm getting the THIS (7.2) station down here in Pawtucket. I had gotten a converter box and had been using it since the new year started, and could only get a few stations up until the change-over date of February 17. Since then I've been able to get 18 stations with a crappy indoor antenna including a station called RTN (10.2) the Retro Television Network--which has nothing but classic TV on!

I'm planning on getting a decent antenna and should be able to pull in quite a bit more than what I'm getting now. Also with the converter, I can switch from regular broadcast to letterbox which is especially cool watching football and movies. There's also an on-screen TV Guide which is very handy! I am impressed with what I've seen so far.

 Re: THIS TV in Boston
I wanted to add that the RTN station has a show on Saturdays at 11pm called Off-Beat Theatre (or something like that) that features some pretty good stuff. Of the few movies I've seen so far were Angry Red Planet, Teen-Age Caveman and Buckets of Blood.
