 Re: true detective
I only receive over-the-air broadcasts and whatever else on the Internet and quite frankly, when it comes to new shows for the past 15+ years--I haven't seen most.

I looked this one up on the IMDB and it's got a rating of 9.5 out of 10 from over 35,000 users and quite a favorable write-up:

Quote:
Right when the opening credits start and you hear that morbidly beautiful song 'Far From Any Road' by 'The Handsome Family', you know that this isn't going to be your usual cop show. Now, if you're more into action films, avoid this at all costs - but if you like amazing performances and dark, brooding cinema peppered with some black humour and a slight psychedelic touch, you're going to love this. The atmosphere and the southern ambiance of this show are so rich and the cinematography is so beautiful, I can hardly think of anything in recent TV-history that compares to this. To make a musical allegory: if the crazy, creative energy of 'Breaking Bad' felt like 'Led Zeppelin', this feels more like 'The Doors'. The slow, bluesy, hypnotic pulse of this show draws you in and hooks you - and then it doesn't let go. By the way, the original music is also excellent (T-Bone Burnett) and fits the mood perfectly.

As far as the actors are concerned, there's nothing but great performances. Even the smaller parts are perfectly cast and the two leads: wow, just - wow! Harrelson (freshly returned from 'The Hunger Games'), plays the "normal", more down to earth character, while McConaughey (still marked by his own personal hunger games) nails the part of his slightly mad, highly intelligent but nihilistic and severely depressed partner. Watching them play off each other (again, after 'Edtv' and 'Surfer, Dude') while their conflicted - and conflicting - characters try to solve a ritual murder is so captivating (and so much fun) I honestly don't care that much if they are ever going to solve that crime.

So for the moment, I'm giving this 10 stars (I can still take back a few if it all goes downhill from here), because in my opinion, there wasn't a single note out of key so far. The writing is top notch, and if the creative team behind this can keep it up, this could turn out to be HBO's next 'Wire' in terms of quality. Cary Fukunaga ('Sin Nombre','Jane Eyre'), who will hopefully one day adapt Stephen King's 'It', proves once more that he's a very accomplished director and a talent to look out for in the future.

My verdict: if you like a well told, character driven story (that might lead you to some very dark places) and if you're not put off by a rather considerate pace, I can't recommend this show enough - this is some great television.

 Re: true detective
I like it. It's slated to run only 8 episodes, and #7 airs tonight, I believe.

Decent slow-burn murder investigation show, heavy on the relationships between/quirks of the two lead detectives.

I don't think it's gonna get very supernatural, but certainly pretty dark.

 Re: true detective
I've been hearing a lot of people rave about this one. Seems to be this year's "hot" show--kind of like how I couldn't go a day without hearing about "Game of Thrones" last year. Based on what everyone's saying (especially people here at the board--whose opinions on such things I value) I'll eventually check it out on Netflix or something (I also am limited to over-the-air broadcasts and online stuff). Maybe I'll even check out "Game of Thrones" someday--though the urgency to do so has died down a bit since I don't seem to hear so many people screaming about how it's the greatest thing since sliced bread and all...

 Re: true detective
game of thrones has been between seasons for awhile

new episodes of that start soon. looking forward to it. there should be a pile of new characters this year as they killed a bunch last year (again!).

the last episode of true detective is this sunday.

it is a creepy show. last night's episode was particularly unnerving (in a good way).

i know a lot of us yearn for the old days of tv but honestly in many ways i think this is the golden age of tv.
there are so many high quality shows on and so well executed that i am overwhelmed about what to watch.

I watched all 8 episodes in a row this weekend. I hadn't plan to do that, but got hooked by the 2nd episode.

 Re: true detective
wasn't it great?

the dialogue was something else.

"You shouldn't have that tape."
"No one should have that tape."

looking forward to next year. the writer/producer said "it will be about the supernatural origin of the transportation system"

Woody Harrelson's charater reaction to that tape seemed real. Both he and McConaughey were perfectly cast for this series, but I guess they won't be back for season 2.
