 Two New Giant Spiders Movies
Of all the different giant bug movies, the giant spider is my favorite. From the excellent classic "Tarantula", to the not-so great (but hilarious MST3K entry) "The Giant Spider Invasion"; I enjoyed them both. Suprisingly, I haven't seen "8 Legged Freak" yet.

Here are two new giant spider movies for 2013:

"Big *** Spider"

"Spiders"

Re: Two New Giant Spiders Movies
I got my Blu-ray copy of SPIDERS for review yesterday (and will be giving it and a DVD copy away on SFS later this season) and watched it this morning. Kinda dull, unfortunately. It plays like a Sci-Fi Channel movie with a bit more money and technical competence, but ultimately spends too much time on plot and not enough on the spiders themselves. The CGI is fairly well done, not convincing, but not as take-you-out-of-the-film as the bad SF Channel effects can sometimes be. This probably would have worked better at 60-70 minutes, as at just under 90 it dragged a bit. Performances aren't great, but we don't really expect them to be in something like this. Maybe worth it as a cheap rental, but even for free for me, I wished I'd watched CAMEL SPIDERS again instead.

Re: Two New Giant Spiders Movies
CAMEL SPIDERS was made a year or two ago by Jim Wynorski (director of THE RETURN OF SWAMP THING, CHOPPING MALL, THE LOST EMPIRE, and a slew of straight-to-video sci-fi and softcore flicks) and produced by Roger Corman's New Horizons.

It's based on that bogus e-mail forward that went around a few years ago, purporting to show soldiers in Iraq holding up giant dog-sized spiders that they allegedly found in holes in the desert. Here we have a group of US soldiers who take out a group of insurgents (unbeknownst to them, with a little help from a gaggle of camel spiders), and lose one man in the firefight, a small camel spider crawling into his mouth before they put him in a body bag to send him back to the US. Once back on US soil, the spider escapes into a small town and starts multiplying. You then get a couple of soldiers and a whole lot of townspeople fending off the camel spider invasion.

The spiders don't get too giant-sized (not as big as they get in THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION, TARANTULA, or SPIDERS), but are still big and plentiful enough to give arachnophobes the willies. The pace is kept breezy, the spiders are never off screen for too long, and the whole thing plays like the modern evolution of the 50s flicks that inspired it. The CGI never really convinces you the spiders are real and in the same plane of existence as the actors, but if you can take them like you would dodgy rear-screen projection or stop motion in the films we love from the past, you might just have fun with it like I did.
