Since we like to remember the things from our childhoods, how about the cars our families drove?
The first car I can remember was a baby blue Chevelle SS with a black top. I remember a picture was taken of me around 1967, when I was no more than 2, standing next to the wheel. It had those thin red racing stripes around the tire.
My father ended up trading it in for a more family type car-- so we got a factory-fresh 1972 AMC Sportabout (it's a kind of mini station wagon with a hatchback and lovely fake wood panels ) which I loved climbing into the back of. I just shake my head now to think we traded in a Chevelle SS for an AMC car
When my mother learned to drive in '73, she got the Sportabout and my father bought a Corvair for himself.
I think the Sportabout lasted to about 1982 before the body rusted out. I learned to drive with that car!
Anyone else like to reminisce about their family cars?

Another great topic Beastball.
My father used to be a mechanic at Scott's Volkswagen in East Providence so I remember we had 2-3 beetles in the 70's. They were great spunky little cars and I don't remember us breaking down in those ever. It was cramped in the back with my brother and sister when we went to the drive in and I wished he would get a station wagon so we could stretch out like the lucky kids.
The station wagon was like the minivan is today and my father was too cool for that I guess.
After that he got the coolest car he ever had, a Citroen CX but unfortunately only had that about a year.
I remember we had a larger mint green Chevy in the late 70's that my mother learned to drive with and when she got her license she treated us to a movie. We drove from Fall River to the Swansea Mall cinema and saw The Muppet Movie and another weekend she took us to see The Elephant Man.
I remember being nervous because my mother had never driven us before but also excited because she would take us fun places often where my father only when he was in the mood/not tired.
I miss those days of being a carefree passenger because I can't stand driving.

My father always had Saabs. My earliest memory is of an orange one in the mid-70s, which was traded in for a blue one in the early 80s, which was traded in for a red one in the mid 80s, which was traded in for a different red one (similar model) in the late 90s, which the folks still have to this day.

We were a Ford family growing up. The first car I remember is the Galaxy 500. My dad purchased a Country Squire station wagon and a Ford LTD from Gibbs in Saugus in the mid-70's and the LTD was the car I learned how to drive when I was in high school.
Funny story. My brother went to college with Neil O'Brien (Conan's brother) and he needed a car so my dad gave him the LTD. At first my dad didn't want him taking it because he joked that it was probably going to catch fire and blow up. Neil didn't care and my dad let him take it.
Talking with Neil about a month later he was asked how the car was handling. He stated that it did in fact catch fire and blow up on Rte 128.

I had to do a Google search for a Citroen CX, skorch because I wasn't sure if I ever saw one...now I'm sure I never saw one
Funny, I can't stand driving either: having to deal with bumper to bumper traffic (why do they call it "rush hour" when nobody's moving?), having to be extra cautious because some jerk is on his cell phone and not paying attention. Or some guy who comes from a country that has no traffic laws and continues to drive that way here
I'm sure if all the ninnies on the road were eliminated, I would love to drive again like when I was a teenager, with my first set of wheels.

The one car we had when I was really young (early to mid 70's) was a Plymouth Fury. My dad insisted the color was dark green, but it looked black to me. The seats were black vinyl. Whenever we had to go somewhere on a hot day, I had to sit on a blanket in the back or else the skin on the backs of my legs would burn. Dad got rid of that car later & got a red Ford Granada.

Geez, I had forgotten about those super-heated vinyl seats in the summer! I remember having to sit with my knees to my chest so my legs wouldn't touch the seat!

There are two cars i remember. A 1973 VW Thing (similar to the picture) and a 1965 Thunderbird (identical to the photo shown). My father painted the Thing fire engine red, put a new convertible top on it and was able to sell it in 1995 for $4000. The '65 T-Bird was stolen while my mother was at work.

If I recall correctly, the Thing was an offshoot of a German military vehicle from WWII....amphibious if I'm not mistaken.
Ahh too bad about the Tbird, but sweet photo. Nice seeing whitewalls..every once in a great while, I'll see a car with them on the road

When my mother got her license in the late 70's she had a buick, just like this one: It was exactly the same color as this one, and had an 8 track tape deck in it. I later used it at my driving test to get my license. My father had an old green International truck like this one: It had no heat, was full of rust holes and only had AM radio. My first car was a 1974 Ford Maverick - red with a white top. My father bought it for me when I got my license and I had it for almost 5 years, then an old lady slammed into it and it was totalled. I loved that car!
