When trying to defrag my computer (windows xp) I get a message that says checkdisk is scheduled to run and to run chkdsk f/a. At command prompt I do this and it says I have errors but can't do anything in read only mode. Please help :x

How about trying to defrag in safe mode? Maybe it'll let you defrag when all other programs are shut off.

Chkdsk (Chkdsk.exe) is a command-line tool that checks volumes for problems.
The tool then tries to repair any that it finds. For example, Chkdsk can repair problems related to bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files, and directory errors.
To use Chkdsk, you must log on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.

Since I run Mac OS X, I have do do something similar called 'Fixing Permissions'
