When trying to defrag my computer (windows xp) I get a message that says checkdisk is scheduled to run and to run chkdsk f/a. At command prompt I do this and it says I have errors but can't do anything in read only mode. Please help

How about trying to defrag in safe mode? Maybe it'll let you defrag when all other programs are shut off.

Chkdsk (Chkdsk.exe) is a command-line tool that checks volumes for problems. The tool then tries to repair any that it finds. For example, Chkdsk can repair problems related to bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files, and directory errors. To use Chkdsk, you must log on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
Since I run Mac OS X, I have do do something similar called 'Fixing Permissions'
